Monday Night Football Reaction: Houston Texans Must Fire Gary Kubiak

David DanielsDec 14, 2010

The Houston Texans lost to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night in an overtime thriller in which the Texans put together a miraculous comeback before Matt Schaub threw a pick six in overtime.

Firing Gary Kubiak may seem drastic; after all, he's taken the Texans to another level since his hiring.  Why fire him?

Sometimes one head coach can only do so much for a football team.

Under Dom Capers, the Texans slowly improved each season: 4-12 to 5-11 to 7-9, but then they dropped off to 2-14, and Capers was fired.  He improved the team's talent, but he hit a plateau where he was incapable of helping the team further.

Under Kubiak, again the Texans went on a streak of improvement.  From their disappointing 2-14 season, they went to 6-10 to 8-8, 8-8 again to 9-7 last year just missing the playoffs.

This season though, they are 5-8 with three weeks left in the season, and it looks as if the Texans have hit another plateau.

This football team has too much talent to not finish with a winning record.  They have a Pro Bowl caliber quarterback in Matt Schaub, the NFL's leading rusher in Arian Foster, the best receiver in football in Andre Johnson, an elite pass rusher in Mario Williams and a tackling machine in Brian Cushing.

The return of another monster linebacker in Demeco Ryans, along with another good draft, will cement the Texans as playoff contenders.

With Kubiak though, Houston may never get over the hump.

Sometimes you have to use a coach as a stepping stone to get to the next level.  The Texans did that with Capers, and they should do the same with Kubiak.

Whether it's going after Bill Cower or Jon Gruden, or picking up a high profile firing like Jeff Fisher if he's given the boot, finding the right head coach is the key to unlocking the Texans' Super Bowl dreams.
