Dear Cleveland Cavs Fans...
I watched the Cavaliers/Heat game in the anticipation that maybe a win could soothe the broken hearts of the millions residing in Cleveland. What they got was a season high 38-point game from the one player they had hoped would be emotionally and spiritually crushed tonight.
James was brutally masterful in his execution tonight: shooting over suffocating defenders, driving in to the post for And Ones after And Ones. The Quitness shirts didn't bother him. The Akron-Hates-You chants didn't even faze him. He was smiling and laughing, and walking over to the Cavaliers bench to enjoy a nice conversation with Boobie Gibson. When it rains, it pours.
The night was more damaging to the Cleveland fans than LeBron. The entire arena uniformly put on a sullen countenance, as James flashed his glory with each shot that seemed to penetrate hearts like the very sword that a cavalier brandishes. How ironic.
The Decision was despicable, and the commercial was even more infuriating. He was throwing fuel on fire, and tonight, your hearts were burning with anger all the more as you reflected on what he's done in the past five months.
But bitterness is a venom that grows worse with time. It festers in the crevices of your broken soul and spreads hotly with every injustice you swear you don't deserve. You tried what you can to ease the pain, but the fact of the matter is it won't help you to keep feeding the hate, as we all witnessed tonight. It's self-destruction.
However, there is something that Cleveland fans must realize. He didn't bite the hands that fed him; he's just the product that you produced. It wasn't the betrayal after seven years, but the 11 years of your idolizing. You crowned him "King" in the birth of his career and you built his ego over the years. And this is the aftermath of idolatry.
Wake up, Cleveland. What would have changed had LeBron shot 1 of 18 tonight? After Miami falls, will it really bring redemption to your souls? Will you feel satisfied, smile and look to a new day? The Cavaliers are seriously disoriented and the team is in no shape to make the playoffs. After decades of chasing championships, will you now derail yourselves for this distraction? What matters more? Bringing home the championship or seeing LeBron fall?
It does you no good to linger in this place, but it will hurt you more as you allow it to. Your city is beaten and devastated. This is a time not to pursue vengeance but to find yourself in the midst of confusion and chaos. Look to rebuild your city with new hope instead of seeking a vindication that you cannot possibly manufacture. If you win a championship, that will be your redemption, not the fall of a "King."
A new star will be born. A different hero will come your way, but let's hope that next time, you won't hoist him up to the heavens as you yourselves descend to the depths of the earth. Cleveland, it's time to move on.
