Updated Fantasy Football Rankings at Week 13: Top 50 QBs for the Rest of 2010

Nick CaronDec 2, 2010

Drew Brees continues his slow slide down the fantasy rankings this week, down to 6th among quarterbacks. Once considered the top fantasy quarterback in the league, Brees remains an every-week starter on almost every roster that has him, but his interceptions remain a big issue. He has now thrown 15 interceptions in his past nine games and while he continues to throw for touchdowns and nice yardage, he has only had two 20-plus fantasy point days in his past eight games due to the interception issue.

Following two monster fantasy weeks in a row, Ben Roethlisberger fell back to fantasy reality in Week 12 against the Buffalo Bills. He is now nursing an injured foot and has been wearing a walking boot in practice as he prepares for this Sunday’s game against the Ravens. Roethlisberger is an inconsistent fantasy player to begin with, but now he becomes an even bigger concern with his injury.

On the rise this week is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel as he moves up four spots to 15th among quarterbacks. Cassel has been on an absolute tear over the past seven weeks. Cassel has thrown for a ridiculous 18 touchdowns with only one interception during that span as he and Dwayne Bowe have surprisingly become perhaps the league’s most lethal touchdown combination. Cassel’s ranking would be higher if he didn’t have a fairly difficult schedule coming up, but especially if he had some sort of history to show us that he can possibly continue at this absurd pace.

Another player on the rise is the Bears’ Jay Cutler, who is coming off of a gigantic four touchdown performance against the Philadelphia Eagles. Cutler looked like the star that the Bears were hoping for when they traded for him, as he had his biggest fantasy day of the 2010 season. If Cutler continues to spread the ball around and not focus on any one receiver, he can really be an asset for his fantasy owners as we approach the playoffs.

The biggest risers and fallers this week all come from the Detroit Lions. The quarterback situation in Detroit is up in the air with Matt Stafford getting healthier, Shaun Hill nursing a freshly broken thumb on his throwing hand, and Drew Stanton looking like he may be the team’s starter this week. Whoever it is will have the benefit of throwing to perhaps the league’s most physically gifted receiver in Calvin Johnson so there is always the possibility for a big game.
