Andre Iguodala: 5 Reasons Why Philadelphia 76ers Should Keep Him

Bob BajekNov 17, 2010

The Philadelphia 76ers are looking to possibly move small forward Andre Iguodala in a trade.

Iguodala wants to win, but Philly isn't winning at 2-10.

He has struggled a bit this year, averaging 12.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game, but this is partially due to injuries and adjusting to first-year coach Doug Collins' new offensive system.

Philly might want to rebuild after this season because Collins was brought in to "evaluate talent" his first season.

Iguodala has some clubs like the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers expressing some interest in the summer.

The 76ers could get a solid return on A.I. 2 because he has three years left on his contract, but maybe they should hold onto the 6'6" swingman.

Here are five reasons why Philly should keep Iggy.

5: Iggy Has Historically Been a Durable Player

Andre Iguodala has played six-plus healthy years in the NBA.

However, he has seen experienced some tough injuries in 2010.

Iguodala has opened the season with a bum wrist and nagging tendonitis in his right Achilles. These aches and pains have cost Iguodala four games so far, and reports have him sitting in the near future.

The injuries have also dipped his production a bit, with him averaging about five more points and two more assists last season.

Historically, Iguodala is a very durable player. Before 2010-11, Iggy missed only six games.

If he gets past these nagging injuries, he should be able to play quality minutes for the 76ers.

4: Evan Turner Provides Good Complement for Iggy

Philly acquired Ohio State stud Evan Turner with the second pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.

Turner is a solid offensive player, who is averaging 9.2 points in 29.5 minutes this season.

In college, Turner was a 20-10 player and the 2010 AP's Player of the Year. He could reach that potential professionally soon. If that happens, Iggy would have draw less defensive pressure and be able to score more efficiently.

Turner and Iggy being able to switch in the No. 2 and 3 positions provides Collins with flexibility.

Potentially, Turner and Iguodala could be a formidable one-two offensive punch if given time to develop.

3: Doug Collins Knows How To Handle Star Players

Collins has coached the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards, so he has a vast knowledge of the game.

During that time, he coached NBA greats Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.

Iguodala's production has been falling the last three seasons in points and steals.

Collins likes to put the ball into a star's hands frequently. Iguodala has good passing skills and some killer instincts.

Having Elton Brand and Turner help Iggy deal with the offensive load will take pressure off the swingman.

With Iggy being a good passer (over five assists last three years), slasher and jump shooter, he will give Collins some options on offense.

2: 76ers Have a Good Starting Five

The Philadelphia 76ers have assembled a decent starting lineup.

Power forward Elton Brand is finally healthy and posting 16 points and eight boards each night.

Andres Nocioni produces energy and solid defense while having a good shot.

Spencer Hawes, 22, provides good length and post scoring at center, but has struggled early.

Jrue Holiday, 20, has 14 points and 7.5 assists per game to begin the season. The second-year point guard will improve with a better supporting cast around him.

Iggy has a good supporting cast to play off his talents. The team should have some time to gel before making a big decision.

1: Iggy Was the Man for Years

Since Iverson left four years ago (despite two brief returning stints), Iggy was his successor as the team's franchise player.

As the 76ers leading man since 2006-07, A.I. 2 averaged 18.5 points, 5.8 boards, 5.4 assists, 1.85 steals and 45.4 percent shooting.

Those are some solid numbers.

Iggy is still only 26, so he is going to hit his prime. He is a top player who deserves to be part of the 76ers' rebuilding efforts.

The Philadelphia 76ers are struggling and might continue to struggle as the year goes on.

Iguodala is still young and provides the 76ers with leadership and ability, but the front office might cave and let Iggy go in a trade.

Hopefully, Philly will realize Iggy can make a difference to the franchise's future.
