Washington Wizards: 10 Things We Have Learned About Rookie PG John Wall

Bob BajekNov 4, 2010

Three games are all it took for Washington Wizards point guard John Wall to prove he has the goods.

Wall has general managers and coaches raving about his abilities, after dominant performances to open his young NBA career.

So far, Wall is averaging 23.7 points, 10.3 assists and a league-leading four steals a game.

Those numbers are outstanding even for veterans.

Here are some of the things Wall has shown us.

He's Fast

During Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers, Wall recovered a ball and sprinted down the court. Wall then burned Evan Turner and Marreese Speights, evaded Thaddeus Young and passed to teammate Nick Young, who hit an open three-pointer.

He's a Good Passer

Many analysts thought Wall would struggle against NBA defenses and make errant passes, which was one of his glaring weaknesses. So far, Wall has over 10 assists a night to 4.7 turnovers.

He's a Showman

Basketball is not boring when Wall is on the floor.

On that same play Wednesday, Wall made Turner and Speights look like slugs. Young tried going for the ball, but whiffed at nothing but air and shadow.

Wall's pass to Nick Young was an accurate dart.

He's a Thief

Wall leads the NBA in steals with four a game. Wednesday was particularly impressive with nine, six coming in the third quarter alone.

His keen eye on the ball will make him a tough defensive matchup for most point guards.

He’s a Point Guard

Wall is obviously a point guard, but he has shown he is a leader in long-time NBA coach Doug Collins’ mind.

"He is a point guard," Collins said to the Washington Post. "When I say that, a lot of guys get brought up where they say they are point guards, where really they are not. John Wall is a point guard. He's a leader and a winner.”

He’s a Good Shooter

Wall has drained 24-of-52 shots, which is a 46.2 percent clip. That’s a solid rate for someone who is still developing his outside shot.

He’s a Decent Free Throw Shooter

One of Wall’s few weaknesses is that he struggles at the line. However, he has shown improvement in his first three games. Wall is 21-of-27 (77.8 percent) at the charity stripe.

He’s Improving

Wall played in the NBA Summer League to work on his passing and that has paid dividends.

He also won the Most Outstanding Player at the 2010 Las Vegas Summer League,  averaging 23.5 points, 7.8 assists, four rebounds and 2.5 steals a game.

He’s in Elite Company

Wall has 71 points and 31 assists in three games. Other players to average at least 20 points and 10 assists in their first games are Hall of Famers Isiah Thomas and Oscar Robertson and NBA champion Norm Nixon.

Wall’s 70 points and 30 assists make him the second player to reach that mark after three games, second to only Robertson.

He’s Humble

Wall has stormed the NBA world in his first few games and had 29 points, 13 assists and nine steals against the 76ers, making him the only player in league history to post those numbers in a game.

However, Wall is humble and understands that he is only a rookie.

"That's a great accomplishment, to be honest, but Oscar Robertson's the only player to ever average a triple-double in a season so that's something that's hard to do," Wall told the Washington Post. "It's great to be in a category with him, but he already proved himself on this level and did everything. I'm still working.”
