Instant Reaction: Boston Celtics Big Four Lead the C's Past the Detroit Pistons

Derrick MorrisNov 2, 2010

Yes, it is now officially the Big Four, but the original Celtic big three in Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen combined for 59 of the Celtics 109 points. Kevin Garnett ended the game with a team high of 22 points and 6 rebounds; Paul Pierce added 21 points and 5 rebounds, and Ray Allen chipped in with 16 points to help the Celtics blow out the Pistons, but the real star of the game was Rajon Rondo.

For the fourth straight game, Rajon Rondo has grabbed headlines. He ended the game with 9 points, 17 assist and 4 steals. It was the penetration of Rondo that gave the Celtics most their easy buckets. Assist wise, Rondo has 67 assist in the first four games of the 2010-11 NBA season. This is the best four game start the NBA has ever seen in terms of assist. John Stockton and Magic Johnson both ended with 65 assist which is 2 assist shy from Rondo’s record. There is no doubt that Rondo is the leader on the floor and he does his job every night of making the game easier for his teammates.

With Shaq out with knee problems, the starting nod was given to Jermaine O’Neal tonight. J. O’Neal went 5-8 shooting and ended the game with 12 points and 3 rebounds. J. O’Neal, who had a rough preseason, looked like he nay have found his rhythm tonight against the Pistons. Over the course of the season Jermaine O’Neal will have to stay in his rhythm if he wants to help the Celtics reach the NBA Finals.

Also for the fourth strait game Glen Davis came up big for the Celtics. Davis scored 10 points and also added 5 rebounds. I know it is a little pre-mature, but Davis’ play is putting him in the conversation for the sixth-man of the year award. Every night Davis brings the same intensity off of the bench and puts the Celtics in position to win the game. Marquis Daniels ended the game with 9 points off of the bench to also help the Celtics.

As for the Detroit Pistons Charlie Villanueva lead the team with 17 points and 7 rebounds, Austin Daye added in 16 points and Rodney Stuckey scored 15 points in the Pistons loss. From my perspective it looked as if there was no vocal leadership from any the Detroit Pistons and that is why they lost to the Celtics by double digits.

Bottom line, the Boston Celtics are the superior team and it showed through out the game. Through Rondo’s leadership the Celtics were no match for the Pistons. The Celtics advance their record to 3-1 where as the Pistons receive their fourth strait loss (0-4).
