NFL Power Rankings Week 9: Ranking the Top 32 Wide Receivers in the NFL
There were a lot of big games put on by wide receivers this weekend in the NFL so there has been some significant movement in our power rankings when compared to last week. There are also a few surprises. It also looks like some of the traditionally better wide receivers in the NFL are having a hard time making our power rankings this week. Guys like Randy Moss, despite their pedigree, are having a tough season and a tough time cracking the weekly power rankings.
Please keep in mind that these rankings are not based on the careers including what they have done in the past or what they could do “if” they had this or “if” they did the same thing that they did last year. For example, both Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson may be much better than Danny Amendola but in all reality, if those guys aren’t as productive as the other guys are then they are going to sit lower on this poll. In addition, we aren’t looking at potential but instead, we are looking at real tangible production.
So, without further delay, here are the top 32 wide receivers in the NFL this week, Week 9.
Number 32-Jabar Gaffney-Denver Broncos
1 of 33
Last Week: Unranked-Gaffney has put up some strong numbers over the past few weeks but isn’t as productive catching touchdowns. Still, he’s a good option for quarterback Kyle Orton and has been very reliable in the Denver offense.
Number 31- Danny Amendola-St. Louis Rams
2 of 33
Last Week: 28th-Amendola continues to help lead the Rams to victories and is quietly becoming one of the more solid wide receivers in the league. Who would have ever thought this former Dallas Cowboys castoff would be able to do what he has done so far this season.
Number 30- Braylon Edwards-New York Jets
3 of 33
Last Week: 11th-The Jets didn’t get much production out of Edwards or any other wide receiver this week. Their quarterback situation is definitely hurting Edwards there.
Number 29- Eddie Royal-Denver Broncos
4 of 33
Last Week: 26th-Royal will continue to slip down our polls this week and may be off by next week. The back and forth passing game in Denver isn’t helping him any.
Number 28- Hines Ward-Pittsburgh Steelers
5 of 33
Last Week: 27th-Ward may end up being a Hall of Famer some day and he’s helping out on offense but his age is showing and he isn’t quite as effective as he used to be.
Number 27- DeWayne Bowe-Kansas City Chiefs
6 of 33
Last Week: 12th-Bowe remains one of the most productive wide receivers in a young and still growing offense. He has worked hard on eliminating his drops and is starting to be one of the better wide receivers in the AFC West.
Number 26- Davone Bess-Miami Dolphins
7 of 33
Last Week: 31st-When teams take his teammate out, Bess comes through and makes some tough catches. This duo could end up being one of the better pass catching duos in the NFL by next season.
Number 25- Mike Wallace-Pittsburgh Steelers
8 of 33
Last Week: 14th-Wallace continues to be one of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s favorite targets. He combines good speed with power and ability and is a Pro Bowl receiver in the making.
Number 24- DeSean Jackson-Philadelphia Eagles
9 of 33
Last Week: 19th-The Eagles had a bye week this past week so hopefully Jackson will be able to go this coming weekend. The Eagles can use his talents to help them win games and get into the playoffs. He’s quite an offensive threat.
Number 23- Larry Fitzgerald-Arizona Cardinals
10 of 33
Last Week: Number 30-Times just haven’t been good for Fitzgerald or the Cardinals but he manages to keep on catching passes and still be represented in this poll. However, he is clearly not the player that he has been before no thanks to his team’s quarterback situation.
Number 22- Johnny Knox-Chicago Bears
11 of 33
Last Week: 29th-The Bears had a bye week last week so we didn’t get to see much of Knox. When they do come back and start playing, hopefully quarterback Jay Cutler will have enough time to get the productive Knox the football and get him making some big plays.
Number 21- Chad Ochocinco-Cincinnati Bengals
12 of 33
Last Week: 23rd-Although his catches and production have slipped over his previous seasons, he’s still a very vital part of what’s become a solid Cincinnati passing game. It’s just too bad that all of this offensive production isn’t turning into more wins.
Number 20- Mike Williams-Tampa Bay Buccaneers
13 of 33
Last Week: 24th-Williams continues to impress a lot of people in the NFL and has become a steady performer in the passing game. If he can keep his head in the game and stay healthy, he should continue to have a good season.
Number 19- Malcolm Floyd-San Diego Chargers
14 of 33
Last Week: 18th-Now that Vincent Jackson is two games away from being back, Floyd may see less catches but for now, with tight end Antonio Gates, he’s what’s hot in the passing game in San Diego.
Number 18- Greg Jennings-Green Bay Packers
15 of 33
Last Week: 7th-The wide receivers in Green Bay didn’t have a very productive week this week so we won’t be seeing too many Packers wide receivers on this list. Jennings continues to be a solid target and should be the number one guy in Green Bay now.
Number 17- Miles Austin-Dallas Cowboys
16 of 33
Last Week: 16th-It’s too bad that the Cowboys quarterback situation has become so strained. Austin is a very productive wide receiver and a good talent and while he maybe should be higher on this list his quarterback situation keeps him here.
Number 16- Steve Smith-New York Giants
17 of 33
Last Week: 21st-The Giants had a bye this week so Smith didn’t see any action but remains part of the list thanks to his talent and ability to keep the Giants offense moving through the air.
Number 15- Santana Moss-Washington Redskins
18 of 33
Last Week: 22nd-Moss experienced some of the problems that the Redskins passing offense had last week but still remains very productive and should continue to be one of quarterback Donavan McNabb’s favorite targets.
Number 14- Brandon Marshall-Miami Dolphins
19 of 33
Last Week: 25th-The Dolphins still quite haven’t figured out just how to use Marshall yet but once they do, he will start putting up numbers similar to what he did in Denver. With that, the Dolphins should be able to win more games.
Number 13- Marques Colston-New Orleans Saints
20 of 33
Last Week: 32nd-The Saints finally got their passing game going against the Steelers and Colston had a pretty decent game. We could see him rise even further as long as the Saints can keep their offense moving in the right direction.
Number 12- Steve Johnson-Buffalo Bills
21 of 33
Last Week: 20th-This guy just keeps on scoring touchdowns and has become a bright spot in a rather dismal season in Buffalo. If he keeps on producing he could be the lone Pro Bowler on this squad.
Number 11- Austin Collie-Indianapolis Colts
22 of 33
Last Week: 8th-Collie, along with Wayne, help to make their team’s passing offense one of the best in the NFL. He should continue to be a force and gain a lot more yards and score more touchdowns this season.
Number Ten: Kenny Britt-Tennessee Titans
23 of 33
Last Week: 3rd-Britt had a decent enough game to start against the Chargers but fell to an injury and may be out for a significant amount of time. If he does, he will fall off our rankings but he still remains one of the top performers in the NFL.
Number Nine: Andre Johnson-Houston Texans
24 of 33
Last Week: 17th-Johnson made some pretty nice catches in the Monday night game against the Colts and has proven his high value week in and week out. He’s starting to see more production as well.
Number Eight: Terrell Owens-Cincinnati Bengals
25 of 33
Last Week: 15th-The other half of the ToOcho show has been having a very good season with his new team and may be taking some of the spotlight off of his partner in crime. For his age, Owens still has a lot left in him and looks like he could go on a few more seasons.
Number Seven: Calvin Johnson-Detroit Lions
26 of 33
Last Week: 9th-Johnson and the Lions beat the Washington Redskins this past Sunday and Johnson is starting to get some notice throughout the league. He’s definitely one of the best out there but just on the wrong team (to get noticed).
Number Six: Hakeem Nicks-New York Giants
27 of 33
Last Week: 6th-Nicks is one of the most productive wide receivers in the game today thanks to the kind of offense that the Giants are running. Expect him to come back strong after the bye week and have another great game.
Number Five: Jeremy Maclin-Philadelphia Eagles
28 of 33
Last Week: 5th-Maclin and his teammates were on bye last week but that doesn’t stop him from being in this week’s power rankings. Look for some great things out of him the rest of this season.
Number Four: Brandon Lloyd-Denver Broncos
29 of 33
Last Week: 13th-While Lloyd may not be producing a lot in terms of touchdowns he is putting up a lot of yards and has become the favorite target of Kyle Orton in Denver.
Number Three: Reggie Wayne-Indianapolis Colts
30 of 33
Last Week: 4th-Wayne had another decent outing on Monday night and proved to everyone that he’s still quarterback Peyton Manning’s favorite target.
Number Two: Anquan Boldin-Baltimore Ravens
31 of 33
Last Week: 2nd-Boldin was on a bye as well but despite his and the Ravens absence from the playing field this weekend, he remains one of the top targets in the NFL.
Number One: Roddy White-Atlanta Falcons
32 of 33
Last Week: 1st-White and the Falcons were off last week but that didn’t cause him to drop down in the rankings. He’s still the best receiver in the NFL right now and should have a big week in week 9.
