Brett Favre/Jennifer Sterger Scandal: Is Allison Torres Deadspin's Source?
I have been hammering away at the details of this scandal for over a week now (see my stories here, here, here and here) in an investigative fashion. The more I delve into the details and try to corroborate things, more questions present themselves, than answers. Yet one thing is crystal clear, we now know who Deadspin.com paid to obtain the evidence.
Yesterday, after reading through the new information that various news sources reported regarding Allison Torres, a New Jersey native as well as a fellow Florida State Cowgirl and friend of Jenn Sterger, something clicked when I added her to the timeline of the scandal.

Here is where things begin to potentially make sense. The initial Deadspin.com article appeared on August 4, 2010 and didn't get much attention at all from the media, due primarily to its hearsay-like nature. It wasn't until Deadspin released the voicemails and cell phone photos some two months later (October 7) that the media took hold of this story and ran with it.
The day after Deadspin initially broke the story, August 5, 2010, Playboy Radio uploaded an on-air interview with Allison Torres in which she confirmed the existence of the voicemails and the photos, claiming to have heard the voicemails and seen the photos (having been with Sterger when some were actually received). The mainstream sports media did not pick up on Torres' claims and she remained invisible.
It wasn't until October 7, 2010 that Deadspin provided the evidence that was the catalyst for the NFL's investigation into the allegations made against Brett Favre, over two months after the initial story.
Both Deadspin and Sterger's manager both stated that a third party, for a significant amount of money, provided the damaging evidence to Deadspin, which was quickly posted on its website. Who better than Torres to be that third-party source for Deadspin? She is a confirmed friend of Sterger's who also lives in New Jersey and may well have had access to Sterger's computer during a recent visit between friends.
Yet, the most intriguing aspect of my hypothesis is that while hundreds of sport news outlets are churning out stories about Torres' connection via the New York Post yesterday, over at Deadspin we hear nothing but crickets with respect to Torres. Not one mention of Torres, except for this article on August 6, 2010.
Deadspin has made no mention of Allison Torres since August 6 or posted any articles about her or her claims of having known about the details of the scandal, not even as supporting evidence in Sterger's initial claims.
This was Deadspin's story. This is their baby, and while someone else comes forward confirming much of what Sterger had to say, thus giving their story some validity, Deadspin remains eerily quiet on the subject of Torres?
Is it possible that, after finding out about Torres on August 6, Deadspin recruited Torres to get the information needed to give this story legs? Two months would have been more than enough time for Torres to reconnect with Sterger and then get access to the files.
Even Sterger's manager, Phil Reese is attempting to down play the relationship between the two former FSU Cowgirls, claiming that they hadn't seen each other in some time.
Maybe Torres is coming forward for more than just her 15 minutes. She may want the world to know that she is the source. Torres might well want the warmth of the spotlight ... and the money.
