Shooting Guard positions is up for grabs
Per Mike McGraw:
"“Obviously I think we have depth. We evaluate by performance,” said Thibodeau after Wednesday morning’s practice session. “We’re pretty sure on four starters. We have one position that’s up for grabs and then playing time with our bench will be determined by how people play.
"
Who will win the competition to start for the shooting guard position for the Chicago Bulls? I will give you the breakdown for some of the players that may fight for the starting job for that position some players that have mention from that same article so let’s get it started.
The Breakdown:
Ronnie Brewer:
This past summer, the Chicago Bulls sign Ronnie Brewer immediately right after the Orlando Magic officially matched the Chicago Bulls offer to JJ Redick. He was a presumed to get a starting job as the shooting guard for the Chicago Bulls since he signed with the team.
He is a defensive player and a slasher who can move with out the ball very well. Yes he is not a good shooter which the Chicago Bulls need for spacing, that is the biggest knock on Ronnie Brewer. With his awkward form which he have to shoot for the rest of his life because of the accident it prevent him to knock down mid-range even though he is ok from there. But that form will prevent him to knock down anywhere from 12ft to behind the arc in a good percentage. He did other things well offensively, he is very efficiently well he only have one bad season so he also got that going.
But he may have competition with other players to compete for the starting job at the shooting guard position. Which there is nothing wrong of having players compete for a starting job, competition is always good and from the same article I love what Ronnie Brewer say about competition here is his direct quote:
"“I think that’s the reason you play basketball is for competition,” Brewer said following Wednesday’s practice. “I think if you don’t like going into camp having to compete for a job, you don’t like playing basketball. I think we all take it in stride and run with it.”
"
I love his comments, you can say the same thing about other sports that fight for a starting job in whatever position you play for. But he did make a good valid point, you love for whatever sports you love, you got to love the competition, you got to love his character. Anyways, I would love to see him start at the two which he is the best player to start in that position and again yes he does not provide shooting but I also do not mind some other player to start that may help provide spacing.
Kyle Korver:
Kyle Korver who is a great pure shooter, the Chicago Bulls sign him this past summer which address one of their needs. He provide three-point shooting and will help benefit both Derrick Rose and Carlos Boozer, he was a teammate with both Carlos Boozer and Ronnie Brewer back when all three play for the Utah Jazz.
Competing for the starting shooting guard position, I do not mind see Kyle Korver starting at the two which he does provide the spacing and the three-point shooting that the Bulls could use. Even though Kyle Korver is more of a small forward than a shooting guard, I not much of a fan of having Kyle Korver playing out of his position but I do not mind see him get the starting nod even though Ronnie Brewer is the better overall player.
Again, from the same article here is what Ronnie Brewer say about Kyle Korver competing against him for the starting job:
"Brewer downplayed any competition with Korver, his former Utah Jazz teammate. They both seem to fit specific roles Korver is the outside shooter, while Brewer specializes in defense and slashes to the basket.
“I think we complement each other, make each other better players,” Brewer said. “I want to be a good shooter, so I work with him on shooting.”
"
Ronnie Brewer is right that when both he and Kyle Korver were seen both on the floor they complement each other very well, if you watch some of the Utah Jazz games few years ago you will see that. Knowing their games, they compliment each other since both give a different styles of their games and I will not mind see either starts even though I dislike the idea of having Korver playing at the two.
Keith Bogans:
I was not a big fan of the signing and I still am, he is a tall shooting guard which the Chicago Bulls sign this past summer. He is an ok defender but nothing to brag about, he does not shoot from behind the arc very well, I believe he shoots around 35% career wise from the three-point line not very impressive.
He will be competing for the starting job for the shooting guard position, if he does win the starting job then it is either because he is the better man win the job which will be sad if you think about it or an injury occur to someone like Ronnie Brewer or Kyle Korver.
Tom Thibodeau may prefer Keith Bogans to start, I believe he did stated that he determined the players play for the starting job. Will Keith Bogans wins the starting job? I do not like the idea of him starting what so ever, him being part of the rotation or see limited playing time is one thing but him starting is another. I know he starts for the San Antonio Spurs last season but he didn’t do anything much beside playing solid defense.
I prefer to start Kyle Korver or Ronnie Brewer in that position since they are the better players than him, only thing that Keith Bogans have it going is that he plays physical on the defensive end and he is a better defensive player than Kyle Korver. But that is not saying much at all.
CJ Watson:
The article stated that CJ Watson is also the candidate to compete for a starting job at the shooting guard position, I do not like the idea and I think it is a bad idea of having CJ Watson playing at the two. He is a point guard, sure he is not a traditional point guard which he is more of a scoring point guard mold type of player. But that is what he is not a two guard, he is way under-size to play the two and it is questionable if he can play off the ball which he needs to if he is playing the two.
I rather have him play the point guard which is better and best suited for him, I am sorry but this is a bad idea even to consider him playing the two even if it’s for a little time. I rather stick with Kyle Korver and Ronnie Brewer playing the two and some with Keith Bogans if needed. CJ Watson plays better at the point guard position anyways, if I remember correctly he play a little at two with the Golden State Warriors this season and I see him struggling there are times he did well but depend on the match-ups. Sure he can knock down the three which he provides that but he is sure not a two.
It is better for him to play the point and stay playing in that position, it is a bad idea to play him out of his position both short and long-term.
Kyle Weaver:
The Chicago Bulls invited Kyle Weaver to training camp late last week, a team who will take a look and give an opportunity to see what he can and can not do. He is a 6’6 shooting guard, he is trying to make the roster and while I do not think he will make the team but I will not mind see him on the roster.
He plays for the Oklahoma Thunder the first two season, he even starts his rookie season but he did not do much at all. At the same time he did not play much either especially last season, I believe he only play twelve games only problem is that his career he only shoot 34% from behind the arc. Not very impressive, again I do not think he will even make the team but even if he does I do not like the idea of him starting the only time I will see him start and even consider if an injury occur to both Ronnie Brewer and Kyle Korver and use him as an insurance.
Final Thought:
I have my hate, like, and dislike in a certain thing for a reason which I do explained my reason and show my reasons from above. Who I prefer in the starting line up playing the shooting guard position, I think it should be either Ronnie Brewer or Kyle Korver as i pointed out before Ronnie Brewer is the better overall player but Kyle Korver is the better shooter. I am not a fan playing Kyle Korver at the shooting guard position, he is more of a three than a two but I do not mind see him start at the two or even play some at that position.
It is also better to stick CJ Watson playing at the one than it is the two, there is to many liability if and maybe when he see playing time at the shooting guard position. The only way it may work is the match ups if play some teams they’ll play the same line up which I did not mention earlier but now I do.
Kyle Weaver as I say I do not think he’ll make the team but he’ll be a nice insurance to have just in case an injury comes about. But I won’t lose sleep if he gets cut, Keith Bogans I hope he does not win the starting job as I pointed out I prefer either Ronnie Brewer or Kyle Korver are the better option to start at the two.
Who do I prefer you might ask? I will probably say Ronnie Brewer start him from the beginning of the season and go from there. Like I say Kyle Korver is the better shooter but Ronnie Brewer is the better overall player exception of the shooting than Kyle Korver.
