National League West Race Update

Adam BernacchioSep 25, 2010

There was a lot going on in the ultra competitive National League West this weekend. Let’s take a look at what went on and how things shape up for the last week of the regular season.

San Francisco Giants Take Two Of Three From The Colorado Rockies: That sound you heard was the final nail being hammered into the coffin of the Rockies for the 2010 season. The Rockies hosted San Francisco for the weekend needing a sweep and instead they lost two out of three unofficially ending their season.

The Giants really put a strangled hold on the Rockies on Friday when they beat the Rockies 2-1 behind their ace Tim Lincecum and the resurgent Pat Burrell. After losing a wild 10-9 game on Saturday, the Giants came back behind Matt Cain yesterday to beat the Rockies 4-2.

The Giants now lead the NL West by 1/2 game over the San Diego Padres.

As for the Rockies, there are only so many times you can keep putting the petal to the medal in September before you run out of gas and that is what happened to the Rockies this week. You could see on Friday night when Lincecum was rolling through their lineup, the Rockies looked as if they had just run a marathon.

Padres Take Two Of Three From The Cincinnati Reds. In a battle of two playoff hopefuls, the Padres took two very exciting games from the Reds on Friday and Saturday before laying an egg on Sunday.

The Padres have now won four out of six and have seemed to find their mojo again. And the guy who has been leading the way is Miguel Tejada.

Tejada hit .360 with a HR last week and his two-run single with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh inning on Friday night to give the Padres a 4-3 lead, might have been the biggest hit of the season to date.

The Padres are 1/2 game behind the Giants in the NL West, but lead the Atlanta Braves by 1/2 a game in the Wild Card standings.

What’s On Tap For This Week? The Padres play four games at home and then finish out the season with three games at San Francisco. The Giants have off on Monday and then play six games at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks and Padres.

That last series of the season between the Padres and Giants should be awesome!
