Carmelo Anthony: Which NBA Team Will He Play For in 2010-2011?

Eric StrellerSep 20, 2010

It was reported on Monday morning that Carmelo Anthony is being shopped around by the Denver Nuggets. This got us, at SPORTSorGTFO.com thinking about the most likely NBA teams that Anthony could be playing for next year.

The Denver Nuggets are starting to accept the fact that they probably aren't going to be able to change their star players mind about opting out of his contract at the end of the season. As much as they want to keep Anthony, they certainly don't want to end up in a situation like the Toronto Raptors or Cleveland Cavaliers.

The most important aspects in making a deal work is finding a team that has the salary cap space and championship chances, while still being located in a big market. Here's the six most likely jersey's that you will see Melo wearing in the 2010-2011 NBA season.

New York Knicks

New York Knicks Chances of Landing Carmelo: 25%

The Knicks have started the process of rebuilding their team by finally adding a significant player, Amare Stoudemire. There has been a lot of talk about the possibility of the Knicks also landing Carmelo and Chris Paul and having a dynamic trio of their own to rival the Miami Heat.

While it seems like a long shot now, it can't be less likely than Dwayne Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh all ending up in Miami seemed just a year ago. Ultimately, the likelihood of this happening will come down to the willingness of Paul and Carmelo to make it work within the salary cap.

New Jersey Nets

New Jersey Nets Chances of Landing Carmelo: 20%

Just recently the New Jersey Nets have moved their way to the top of the list. They are making the strongest case for Melo's talents and would be the first big move that the Nets have made since Mikhail Prokhorov took over as the teams owner and claimed that he was starting a dynasty. Landing Anthony would be a big first step in this process.

Chicago Bulls

Chicago Bulls Chances of Landing Carmelo: 20%

The Bulls are still trying to land an A-list star and Carmelo would suit that need perfectly. They got Carlos Boozer this off-season, but I put him on the B+ list. Melo would instantly make the Bulls a contender and give them the appearance of how a team should be built, around a star or two, with one or two young rising stars, and a strong core of solid role players.

The Bulls are a little behind the Nets and the Knicks in the pecking order for Melo, but the possibility is still there of him ending up in Chicago. The only thing that scares me here is who the Bulls would have to give up to obtain Melo. One thing the Bulls do have is that Melo has made it public that Chicago is one of his preferred destinations.

Denver Nuggets Chances of Keeping Carmelo: 15%

Just about a month ago this option looked like it would have been 50%, but things have changed. The Nuggets are tired of trying to convince him that he should stay to no avail. The only reason I put them at 15% is because he's currently in a contract with the team. The front office wants him to stay and Denver wants him to stay, but you know the saying, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."

Melo doesn't think that the Nuggets are going to be a contender anytime soon and he wants to win. He's seen the new big three join up in Miami and knows that it's going to take more than what the Nuggets have to dethrone the Lakers and then take out the Heat.

Los Angeles Clippers

Los Angeles Clippers Chances of Landing Carmelo: 10%

This is the team that I personally would like to see Carmelo play for. The Clippers have been horrible for over a decade now and Melo would be exactly what they have needed. With future superstar Blake Griffin on the verge of his first NBA season, Melo would be the perfect addition.

The Clippers have a solid core of young talent and the city's market is perfect for a star like Carmelo. Who wouldn't want to see Kobe and Melo playing in the same city. I think it's big enough for both of them.

Houston Rockets

Houston Rockets Chances of Landing Carmelo: 5%

I know what you're thinking: No way that Carmelo Anthony is wearing a Houston Rockets jersey anytime during his career. Most of me thinks that as well. However, the Rockets are strongly inquiring about Melo and they have a team, when Yao Ming is healthy, that is a playoff staple. It's tough to speculate what the rest of Yao's career will look like and I think the unknown is the one thing that will keep Melo from ever going to Houston.
