LeBron James GQ Feature Reminds Us To Look in the Mirror
LOS ANGELES, CA
While sitting at LAX waiting for my 3 hour delayed flight to Sacramento, I decided to check into the gift shop and pass my time by reading a couple of magazines (can we possibly have a rebirth of the print media era?) It seriously is so much more convenient than staring at a screen all day…). I came across the September issue of GQ magazine with LeBron James on the cover as the main feature and decided to check it out. The article which was written by J.R. Moehringer revealed a lot more about the real LeBron James than any other writer has been able to in my opinion. It provided a very good glimpse into the true personality of LeBron James. Now I don’t like to be swayed by certain articles but it was hard to ignore the idea that the self proclaimed “King” was just doing what any 25 year old would do with the world at their feet in any industry while the rest of us took our cue (including myself) to brand him as “showing insufferable self-importance” as Moeringer said.
Moeringer’s piece showed that LBJ clearly didn’t and still doesn’t care what people think of his “Decision” I can also gain the sense that LeBron never had any loyalty towards Cleveland and it was more of a loyalty to his boyhood friends and the community of Akron, Ohio. More than anything, I learned from the feature that LeBron does not want to be alone and wants to obviously re-create his high school team support system along with its memories. Moeringer clearly showed this over and over again with his descriptions of LeBron’s desire to not feel lonely in his surroundings. I feel that we all miss or will miss (depending on your age) the peak of camaraderie we had in our lives, whether it was in college or high school or during our childhood days.
Logistically, with a chance to have that feeling of camaraderie that included stars that were major upgrades of talent (Bosh and Wade) compared to his former team and also knowing the fact that it would not be long before everyone would be back on his bandwagon once he starts winning titles (my roommate and fellow writer Rahul Padmanabhan pointed this out to me) as well as the hypocrisy of how we judge a player and his legacy in the league, he made a very smart decision. I just didn’t like how he put it on display for the world but there I go being just as much a narcissist as he is.
This is just an opinion… so please Pardon My Bias
