Rudy Fernandez Calls It Quits, Refuses To Play the Remainder Of His Deal

The Rudy Fernandez drama continues to develop within the Portland Trail Blazers organization. But this time, Rudy has gone too far.
According to Rudy's agent, Andy Miller, Rudy Fernandez would like the Portland Trail Blazers to release him, voiding the remainder of his contract, and allowing Rudy to go home and play in the Spanish league in Europe.
It turns out that new general manager Rich Cho has no plans to release Rudy on his watch, making this Rudy situation even more curious (or frustrating).
So what does that mean for the potential trade deals that were on the table?
Well at this point, they all have to be off of the table until this situation clears up.
The reports were that the Blazers wanted a first round pick in exchange for the once promising Spaniard, but now that Rudy has gone public with his frustrations, I cannot see the Blazers getting anything more than a second round pick and some cash.
So Chicago is a no go.
Boston is a no go.
New York would be an impossible trade to make.
And anyone else that wanted Rudy on their team is going to sit on their hands until this thing clears.
So much for waiting until after the World Championships, waiting until Rudy dominated the World game to drive up his value, bringing in more for the Trailblazers organization.
The only option left on the table is to let him whine, let him suffer, let him become Portland's Public Enemy #1.
Fine the hell out of him when he doesn't show up for practice or give him the opportunity to play if he deserves it.
From Rudy's perspective, those options give him little or no choice.
Respect your contract or let your pocketbook and public image suffer.
Portland fans don't like whiners. They don't like punks. They don't like trouble makers. And you know what? They don't like Divas either. Rudy Fernandez, you are acting like a max contract Diva and running yourself right back to the bench.
At this point it looks as though Rudy will be somewhere else next season. But if the Blazers cannot find a deal, they will give him the opportunity to play basketball.
It is up to him if he agrees to oblige.
