Allen Iverson: How The Mighty Have Fallen...

Leon HuynhAug 7, 2010

1996 First Pick, 2001 MVP, 4x Scoring Champion, 11x All-Star and one of the highest scoring guards in the NBA under 6 feet.

And now a shadow of his former self...

A.I being most prolific in his decade with the 76ers who gave him his breakout rookie season where he broke MJ's ankles, had a devastating 23.5 PPG and Rookie of the Year trophy.

Iverson's play style has gotten fans attention and filled the stat sheets up to tipping point, but championships are won when stats stop to matter and a team score is all that matters.

Despite this he has clashed heads with the best of the playoffs and come out with 29.7 PPG.

But that seems so far away now, with A.I failing his last three stops in Memphis, a second foray into Philly and Detroit before that. Averaging a respectable 14.3 PPG in the three teams in the last three years...respectable for a role player...but not a former superstar who averaged 33 PPG just 4-5 years ago.

Iverson's ability or lack thereof to pass around the ball and share, spelled disaster for his stops in Detroit which showed promise until he demanded to be a starter and then to be traded. Then followed Memphis where he played 3 games and disappeared, he later then returned this time back into a 76er's jersey.

This was a fairytale for the fans in Philly, their former champion returning to turn things around in 76ers, he entered to thunderous applause and sold out crowds, but it wasn't meant to be Iverson unable to play any further due to his daughter's health issues failed to show up at any more games.

A.I's failure to depart from his play style to accommodate teams has been his downfall, but A.I is back this season looking for any team that will sign him and give him a chance at Championship Gold that has eluded him in his 14 years in the League.

But is A.I more of a liability than an asset? Maybe we will never see...
