Chicago Sky Bounces Back in San Antonio

John HowellJul 24, 2010

San Antonio, TX โ€” You know when a team has turned a corner when they achieve a series of firsts.

When the Chicago Sky lost to New York on their home court last night, it was easy to see the glass as half empty. The Sky had an opportunity to nudge ahead of New York for a final playoff spot,ย but despite ample opportunities, they did not do so. Fans were tempted to think, "Same old Sky. Can't win when it counts."

A closer look proves such an assumption wrong. In actuality, the Sky have achieved a series of firsts this year. The Sky won four consecutive games for the first time in their history. They broke an attendance record. They have reached the .500 mark in the second half of the season twice now.

So after a disappointing loss to New York in their own house, the Sky achieved another first tonight: a come-from-behind victory in the fourth quarter on the road in the AT&T Centerย against the Silver Starst. ย

With 3:10 left in the game, the Sky trailed the Silver Stars, 72-64. The "typical" Sky behavior would have been to fold and quit with so little time left. ย But not tonight. Tonight would be a night for another first.

Chicago put together a 9-0 run, sparked by Sylvia Fowles and Jia Perkins, and the Sky finished their first four-quarter comeback for the 75-72 win.

Fowles recorded her 10th double-double in the Skyโ€™s last 11 games. Her game-high 23 points included the first 3-point attempt and make of her career. She also grabbed 12 rebounds.

Jia Perkins (pictured above) added 15 points including six consecutive points in the final minutes of the game. Four Silver Stars (8-14) scored in double figures led by Michelle Snow and Roneeka Hodges with 13 points apiece.

The Sky (12-12) have swept San Antonio on the season and will take another crack at getting over the .500 mark next week when they meet the Indiana Fever Tuesday in Indiana.

If they win, it will be another first, for the season, having lost to Indiana four times already this year.
