Why Chris Paul's Trade Demand Complicate Things For New York
The Knicks may be on top of Chris Paul's 'want to be traded list' but CP3's trade demand complicates everything.
Eddy Curry = Carmelo Anthony
Reymond Felton = Chris Paul
That was the plan. When Eddy Curry comes off the book next year we offer max contract to Carmelo. And then Reymond Felton's contract contract comes off plus others for CP3 in 2012 while constructing a competitive team with young nucleus.
Raymond Felton is the PG on a lease for two years and then the Knicks would have a contender with two marquee FAs joining Amare.
But Chris Paul cannot, will not, wait. He wants to move now.
Knicks may be on top of Paul's list but if they are going to trade with New Orleans, they HAVE to include Curry's contract. Whether New Orleans wants it or not, it's the only way to make the money work. Eddy Curry plus Gallo (or better yest, Chandler and Douglas since they'd need a backup PG to Collison) plus 3 Mil in cash (maximum allowable) will do the trick as far as money is concerned. Which, I don't think New Orleans will go for and not having first round picks to trade hurts big time as well.
They could also accept to take Emeka Okafor's bad contract off their hands. Then they would have to give up Curry and some combination of three or five from Gallo, Chandler, Turiaf, Azubuike, Randolph, Douglas and Walker. Yes everybody other than signed FAs
Even if New Orleans go for the above trade, Knicks season will be in shambles because Knicks will be paying 7 Mil to a backup PG and second rounders. So they would really have to trade Raymond Felton come December 15th.
It also means the Knicks will not have the money for Carmelo Anthony in next years' FA market. As soon as the Knicks trade Eddy Curry, he will sign that extension right away because next year is not happening. But if Carmelo really wanted to be a Knick, he could always force a sign and trade next year so it is not impossible.
If Anthony does not sign the extension, it may also force Denver to trade him during the season. It would be great if Knicks can make a package including Felton to Denver for Carmelo Anthony but Denver has two starting caliber PGs in Billups and Lawson. So they would need to involve a 3rd team.
Anthony demanding trade has made it very difficult for his own Big3 in New York very difficult to happen.
But who knows, he may have made it happen earlier.. miracles do happen.
In Walsh we trust... hey he is getting paid all that money because he is smarter than me, right? Make it happen dude.
