Wesley Matthews Deserves It..
2009 came as a nightmare for Wesley Matthews as each of his fellow draftee being called one by one and left him out without a team but it never made him doubt his talent never did he entertain the thought that he doesn’t belong in the NBA. His dad Wes Matthews had a long career but it wasn’t bed of roses either. His nine seasons in the NBA came with 6 different teams a typical journey man who also had stints with USBL and Italy’s CBA league.
Wesley had to go through a rigorous summer league to earn him a contract and a league minimum $457,588 by the Utah Jazz. But with all those frustrations it came out a blessing in disguise for Matthews. It made him a better and mature player who works doubly hard to earn his spot in the roster. From undrafted rookie, to a 40 game starter to a dependable defender guarding Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant in the playoffs it was all a product of hard work and perseverance.
Now all the hard work paid off with a guaranteed $34 million 5 year offer by the Portland Blazers with the Jazz trying to match the offer within 7 days with Matthews being a restricted free agent. Coach Mcmillan saw something in Matthews the same look Jerry Sloan saw on that summer league on an undrafted rookie trying to get a spot. Signing Matthews could clog up Portland’s roster with Brandon Roy, Nicolas Batum, Jerryd Bayless and Rudy Fernandez but this is the Blazers opportunity finding that one diamond among boulders of stones. They need hassle players they need that someone to defend such quality players such as Kobe and Melo. Nate saw a potential and his just within grasp in taking home the bacon as the unassuming guard from San Antonio Texas said he still needs a lot of time for improvement which tells us that we still haven’t seen his full potential yet now that’s the scary part.
With all the big three nesting down in Miami and New York forming a formidable trio in Amare Stoudemire, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony this 2011 it looks like everything in the NBA comes in threes… but Wesley Matthews had one big three in mind and it’s me, myself and I… he knows what he wants and as long as you’re working hard everything will just fall into place… In a world with big threes and in a place where it takes two to tango… Wesley knows that it only takes one to break dance… as funny as it may seems. He deserves the contract more than anything.
