Zack Follett: Jay-Z Similar to the Antichrist

If you have the time to spend, peruse Zack Follett’s videos on his Vimeo account. 

What you will find is a very entertaining, albeit humorous, look into the life of a pro athlete quickly becoming a fan favorite in Detroit. 

From his close and personal encounter with a real Lion to intense workouts in the woods at a high elevation, Zack Follett is a balls-out kind of guy.  So ballsy in fact, he even calls out rapper Jay-Z by comparing him to the Antichrist.

What’s that you say—the Antichrist? 

Yes, make no mistake, he’s that ballsy. 

You see, Zack Follett takes issue with some of Jay-Z’s lyrics regarding religion.  Being a man of faith, he is—it would appear—deeply offended by some of the content of Jay-Z’s rap. 

Here is where he takes issue, “And Jesus can’t save you, life starts when the church ends.”  It’s certainly a brazen line and one that has received some feedback since the release of the song, but I guess where I really diverge from Zack Follett is with this one question: Who cares?

Rappers often include lyrics that shock—it’s a part of what makes the song memorable and adds to their notoriety. 

Whether or not you agree with the line is beside the point; why does it even matter?  3OH!3 has a song out where they sing, “do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips.”

Eminem often pokes fun at gay people in his music, even using derogatory terms for them.  Ludacris had a song out where he called Hillary Clinton an "irrelevant bitch." 

Rap is filled with things we don’t necessarily agree with, but listen to all the same because we like the sound.

Now as someone who went to school for psychology, I’m supposed to believe there is always something deeper than what is on the surface; another layer to analyze and explore. 

Sometimes music is just music, though. 

These guys aren’t calling for the death of another human being or anything like that.  They’re just expressing themselves through their music, which they have creative license to do. 

You don’t have to agree with it or even like it, but to publicly declare that one of these rappers shares traits with the Antichrist because of a lyric…isn’t there a passage in the Bible, “Thou shalt not judge?”
