One Word To Describe Hedo Turkoglu: Ball

Tim CaseJul 12, 2010

This offseason, the Phoenix Suns had to pull something off that would replace the offensive numbers that Amar'e Stoudemire put up. Fans had high hopes in landing David Lee, Carlos Boozer, Luis Scola, or even a potential reunion of Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash. No one could have imagined Hedo Turkoglu to be in this position, but it could pan out to be a brilliant move come playoff time.

Coming off an awful first season with the Toronto Raptors, Hedo will look to instantly play to his potential as he did with the Orlando Magic in 2009-10. Not playing well alongside Chris Bosh and Andrea Bargnani, as well as having problems fully committing himself to every game, he wasn't able to live up to his five-year, $53 million deal made only one summer ago.

Having the ability to create his own shot, the ability attack the basket well for his size, a quick first step and ball-handling skills, excellent skill in catch-and-shoot situations, the ability to run the pick-and-roll as either the passer or shooter, and also his good three-point shooting will come in handy while playing with the Phoenix Suns. All of this is going to make the game that much easier for Steve Nash; not always having to handle the ball will help keep his back and legs healthy for the long stretch.

Just imagine a pick-and-roll between Frye or Lopez and Turkoglu, it is what Dwight Howard and Turkgolu ran over and over against the Celtics to make it to the Finals and could do the same in Phoenix.

Even though he will create many matchup nightmares on the offensive end, on the other side of the ball, he may be an easy opponent. An undersized power forward, he is most efficient as a small forward and will find himself overpowered on a nightly basis. The best way to stop a scorer from doing just that is to make him play defense as hard as possible.

As long as Turkoglu stays healthy and has the right mindset, there is a no way we shouldn't expect 20 points a night from him. If Aaron Nelson and the rest of the training staff can get him into the best shape and condition in his whole career, no one knows what he could do after that.

Now one of the deepest rosters in the league just got that much better. Having a strong 11-man rotation, the Suns will be able to find plenty of rest for their starters and allow their young bench to continue to grow.

Turkoglu will now have the opportunity to make the last shot with seconds on the clock for the Phoenix Suns this coming season, instead of trying to do the same against them.
