The Godfather Part Two: Atlanta Braves Manager Bobby Cox Looking For His Sequel

Evan WalkerJul 12, 2010

It's the first day of the MLB All-Star break. A day where players can take a rest, ice their injuries, and enjoy the festivities. But there is one old man down at Turner Field who refuses to go home. He probably got there before any of us even thought about waking up, and he will leave there late tonight right after we're tucked-in.

This man takes no vacation. The word, "break" is not in his vocabulary, because after this year, his whole life will be a vacation. And he is not about to start it early. This man is Braves future Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox.

There is no comparison for Bobby Cox, because there has never been anyone like the man. He was the greatest manager of the greatest team in the 1990s, and Cox led the Braves to victory in the 1995 World Series.

Bobby has gained the respect of every single manager, player, GM, owner, and fan in Major League Baseball, a title that no one else can claim.

Although the Braves were the team of the 90s, Braves fans around the world think they should have more than just one championship, and no one else has the hunger for another ring more than "The Godfather" Bobby Cox himself.

Everybody in the Braves organization, from the players to the owner, realize that this will be Bobby Cox's last year as the Braves manager, and they all are showing it.

The players are playing with more heart and the front office is making bolder moves than ever before. There is also some speculation that GM Frank Wren is going to make another star outfielder an offer they can't refuse.

The Braves have never been known for their big trades or expensive free agent signings. This organization raises home-grown athletes and develops them into Major League superstars, just like first-time All-Star rookie Jason Heyward and six-time All-Star Chipper Jones.

This may be true, but everyone in Braves country agrees that this year is different. This year is for Bobby.

The Braves could not have asked for a better first half in 2010. They have the best record in the National League and are currently sitting on top of the NL East with a four-game lead above the Mets, and four-and-a-half game lead above the reigning NL Champions, the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Braves have won two out of three games in their past five series and are 14-1-3 in their last 18 series. That's consistency.

Chipper Jones said not to mention the "R" word before the end of the season, and what Chipper says, goes. But if you happen to know what the "R" word is, then you know this year could mean just as much for Chipper as it does for the skipper.

This season for the Braves is a Disney movie waiting to happen, with DeNiro playing Bobby, Brad Pitt playing Chipper, and....Jason Heyward playing Jason Heyward, because he can do anything.

The only question on everyone's mind is, how will this movie end?
