LeBron James: Why The Negative Publicity For the King?

Jerry MurphyJul 8, 2010

I just finished reading an article by Kevin Blackistone on Fanhouse.com, and I am a little confused.

In the article he is bashing LeBron James for commercializing his announcement tonight on his future NBA intentions.

But is it not guys like Blackistone and networks like ESPN (remember them Kevin? The 800-pound sports televising gorilla that allows you on shows like "Around the Horn" to get exposure to promote your writing?) that are exacerbating the problem? Are writers and media outlets not talking about this everyday? You people have helped create the problem, and now you want to complain about it and chide him for using it to his advantage.

Heck, you (the media) nicknamed him King James. Now you want to complain because he is using his celebrity to make this announcement. You also complained about the fact that he gets to decide who asks questions and where the advertising dollars go. Did you not hear the advertising dollars go to the Boys and Girls Club of America?

You also state that if he goes to Miami it will be the most-despised decision in basketball. You said, and I quote, "It will be seen as an attempted takeover of the game's competitive spirit spearheaded by the most selfish superstar in the game."

Sounds to me like he wants to win a championship. Do you not have to put together the best possible team to make that happen? Oh, and by the way, he will also be taking a large pay-cut to go to Miami to win said championship(s). Doesn't sound megalomaniacal to me (which is also a term you used to describe LeBron). Giving up money to win doesn't sound selfish either.

Before all the bashing begins, no, I am not a LeBron James fan or a Cleveland or Miami fan. I am a basketball fan. I do not care where LeBron ends up. I will still write about it. I just cannot stand hypocrites. You helped create the monster, and yet somehow it is the monster's fault.

Enough said for now. Let's reconvene after 9:00 p.m. EST.
