NBA Free Agency: LeBron James' "The Decision" Is "The Ridiculous"

Jose SalviatiJul 7, 2010

"The Decision", really?

That's what LeBron James' team is calling his hour-long television special to be aired on ESPN Thursday, July 8th.

The Decision. When you take a word as innocuous as "decision", then add a "the" before it while capitalizing both words, you open yourself up for instant scrutiny. Consider something like "The Marriage" or "The Tuna Fish Sandwich". Silly, right?

Have you ever driven by a rundown shack somewhere only to see a sign proclaiming it's the "home of the worlds best coffee"? Or maybe their cooks can grill the "worlds best hamburger".

Ridiculous.

On display on Thursday will be "The worlds best basketball player", or so the sign says. Seems to me the worlds best should be able to of won at least one Championship in his seven years in the Association, but what do I know.

I admit to being as enthralled by the whole LBJ process as anyone. I've written my fair share of articles touting the best place for the King to hang his crown, but after hearing about this TV show I am officially jumping off the bandwagon.

I truly and honestly no longer care where James plays next year.

If James lands in Miami, so what. Cleveland, hum-drum. Chicago, yawn. Yes, even Los Angeles for the woe-be-gone Clippers, I could care less. The last time I remember a player making himself bigger than the game was when Lloyd Bernard Free decided to become World.

Can you say narcissism?

The funny thing is, for all his amazing exploits on the court, James has exactly the same number of rings as World B. Free ended his career with, zero.

I'm not suggesting James isn't amazing, he is. Not saying he could'nt turn the fortunes of a franchise around overnight, he has and might again with his new team. I'm simply suggesting some things are better off done in the low-light, not the spotlight.

Yes, I'm aware that the proceeds from the event will go to the Boys and Girls club, which is wonderful. However, lets not be blinded to the fact that this is all about James first and foremost. He wants us to watch him decide.

I for one, won't.

Well, unless word leaks he is picking the Clippers, then I might sneak a peak. Not for long, and I won't be happy about it, but, what's the harm. Right?
