LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade Could Make History Together
The saying goes "Rome was not built in a day", implying that a dynastic empire does not come into fruition without plenty of time to grow. Yet over night the logic behind that train of thought might be proven to be false.
As it stands the Miami Heat are poised to build a potential dynasty the likes of which will dramatically alter the future NBA landscape for years to come.
The Miami Heat would suddenly become the New York Yankees of basketball. They wouldn't have the storied history of the "Bronx Bombers" but they instantly become that polarizing type of franchise. The Evil Empire of the NBA. The one loaded with talented stars which would have both a huge base of fans rooting for them and wearing their jerseys along with a potentially much larger number of people who would criticize the trio for joining forces and root against them at every turn.
The union of Lebron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade would create a juggernaut of a team core which if provided with a proper supporting cast could run rampant across the league. Never before in the history of the league has their been a starting five that would arguably boast 3 of the top 10 players in the NBA while at the peak of their careers.
This is not the same as Boston's "Big Three". Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen were already about to turn to start the back 9 of their careers. Bosh, James and Wade are entering that 3-5 year window where a players career/legacy is often cemented. They may see this as their one and only opportunity to ever create such a powerful ensemble.
Now alot has been offered for the argument that such a pairing would water down any accompishments by the trio. People believe that LBJ's marketability would be hampered and reputation tarnished. there's the argument for two "alpha dogs" not being able to co exist.
I think history would look favorably upon Lebron if he did team up with Wade and win multiple titles. Would James rather look back on his playing years and say hey I got 2 titles and Wade got 1 or does he prefer to look back and say I got 5 rings and Wade 6?
Also James would likely have 3-5 years of playing to match if not surpass Wade in rings. People always want athletes to be all about winning yet they are criticizing these two (three if you include Bosh) for wanting to put themselves in the best possible position to do so. They may truly realize that while they can possibly win titles apart from one another, they would basically be all but assured of one if not several titles together.
This is not to say that the three haven't had success up to this point of their careers. As is Lebron James has garnered numerous individual awards. From R.O.Y to League and All Star MVP's to NBA scoring titles. Yet while "The Kings" trophy shelf may be half full his fingers remain with out any such rewards and now the pundits and critics have begun to come out of the woodwork claiming that he's "mentally soft", that "he's not clutch" and possibly worst of all that he is an "ego centric diva".
Dwyane Wade has not received as many individual accolades as Lebron but he has been the only one of the 3 to win a title. In 2006 Wade culminated his third season in the league by carrying the Miami Heat through the playoffs and leading them to their first NBA championship with a memorable series performance versus the Dallas Mavericks (earning the Finals MVP award in the process). While Wade enjoyed a meteoric rise upon entering the league the last 4 seasons have been anything but kind. During that span Wade has had to deal with a season ending injury and three first round playoff exits.
Chris Bosh meanwhile made the All Star team 5 times and has been named to the All NBA team as well. Still he too has been called out for not winning while putting up good stats. In his defense the first 7 years of his career have been spent in the NBA's version of Siberia. Toronto which is a beautiful city has failed as an NBA organization in progressing deep into the playoffs or retaining the stars they draft. Thus it seems that like others before him Chris Bosh has had as much as he can take playing for the futile franchise.
So now we get to the dilemma/lucrative possibility at hand. The three could combine their efforts to turn the Miami Heat into the most talked about franchise in the NBA if not all of sports.
It has been well established that all three, especially Wade and James enjoy an off court camaraderie. They all played pivotal parts in the "Redeem Teams" gold medal showing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. They have also played together on several All Star teams. During that time they have forged a friendship that is poised to be much stronger then most thought.
Three seasons ago they all signed the same extensions. At the time rumors swirled that this was perhaps their way of joining the same team in the summer of 2010. The last 12 months there has been speculations that Wade and James might go to New York in order to revitalize the Knicks. More recently it's been all but confirmed that Bosh and James were going to go to Chicago and try to bring back the success enjoyed during the Jordan glory days. Then last week we had the report that the "Summit" between the NBA elite took place and that the outcome of it has left the Miami Heat as the team that might land all three and pull off the biggest coup in NBA Free Agent history. Since then it has gone back and forth between all 6 suitors involved.
There are several reasons why Miami makes the most sense. For starters they are in the best position to add all three and not just one or two. Miami offers them both a first class organization and the allure that is living on or near South Beach.
Team President Pat Riley is one of the most respected men to ever work in the league. Riley has shown through on court championships with the Lakers and Heat that he is a person who knows how to build teams and lead them to the promise-land.
Miami offers them great weather throughout the NBA season and less pressure than they'd face in either New York or Chicago. Not that there wouldn't be great expectations and enough pressure to win big now as is if they teamed up anywhere. But in South Florida they would avoid the hoard of scandal seeking New York paparazzi and journalists along with the seemingly giant shadow that is cast over any one trying to win in Chicago.
The Heat also enjoy the fact that Florida has no state income tax unlike New York and Chicago. This means that the three would stand to keep more of their money if they played in Miami. Their salaries and endorsement incomes would not be touched which is a like a cherry on top of your sundae.
But if this were to happen it would have absolutely nothing to do with money. Truth is Lebron and Wade are marketing giants. James definitely will make more off the court than on it during the course of his career. So if this were to occur it wouldn't be as much for financial gain as it will be for building a potential dynasty, for creating a legacy that will insure these three men will be spoken of for generations to come when talking about basketball.
By doing this they give themselves the best chance to reach the very top echelon of NBA history. They would prove that it's not all about individual accolades, that it's not all about marketing and money but rather about being a winner and how you are remembered.
It will hopefully teach a lesson to kids who follow the NBA that team success is more important than individual accomplishments. That the shine which comes off a Larry O'Brien NBA championship trophy is brighter than any spotlight that they could have on their own.
Just ask the like's of Karl Malone, John Stockton or Patrick Ewing how they would've felt of such a potentially lucrative opportunity. That would put into perspective just how much winning means to the great players who battled and made millions in the league for years but never were able to attain the ultimate prize.
Whether this seismic change will ever happen comes down to a couple factors. First how good is Pat Riley ( he of the top selling motivational/team building/leadership books) at pitching and selling this mind blowing idea. Can he convince Bosh, Wade and James that teaming up while at the zenith of their careers will definitely equate into an epic run reminiscent to that of the 60's Celtics, 80's Lakers or 90's Bulls. Those 3 times all had their dynasties, perhaps the "Super Friends" see that Miami has had no such majestic run. Thus teaming up in Miami is like painting a masterpiece on an empty canvas.
Then there's the issue of what does "King James" really want to do. James who is the single most important piece in this puzzle has been reclusive since his appearance on Larry King. So everything that has been rumored and gossiped about is just that rumors and gossip. No one truly knows what Lebron plans or wants to do.
Everyone can speculate but no one maybe not even James himself knows whether he wants to try to be the heir to Michael Jordan and join a young nucleus of talent to win big in Chicago. Perhaps he covets New York and playing in the mecca of American sports alongside Amare Stoudemire with increased exposure and marketing potential.
Both Chicago and New York have passionate fan bases and offer large sports markets. However Lebron has become the biggest name in sports while playing in Cleveland so that may not sway him much. This brings up the home factor.
James an Akron,Ohio native may remain in Cleveland if only because of the guilt he'd feel if he left. Lebron is bigger to the people of Ohio than any athlete to another city anywhere. If he left the Cavaliers he may fear suddenly being loathed by the same people who were his biggest supporters.
So it's all up to Riley, the man who has carved out an iconic image with his slick hair and Armani suits has patiently waited over two years for this very moment/opportunity all the while bypassing instant upgrades with which to assist Wade).
Riley needs to convince Lebron that nothing compares to the ultimate joy and fulfillment that comes with being the last team standing. That hoisting and kissing a 14 pound trophy and bathing in champagne is significantly more important when it comes to engraving yourself as one of the GOAT's (Greatest of all Time) then anything else you can achieve.
Wade and Riley know that feeling and are thirsting to quench themselves by attaining it again. Does James have that same itch? That same desire to not just be called "The King" but to actually get to sit upon that throne and truly be crowned as great?
An answer to all of this will soon be given. Within 2-3 days to we will finally find out the intentions of these three basketball giants. All one can do now is sit back, speculate and wait.
If it did occur and they chose to unite then there's no doubt the Heat would instantly be pushed to the forefront of favorites to win a championship. Las Vegas would place them at the very top with the 2 time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.
To actually think about the proposal leaves one almost awe struck, it might leave opposing teams shell shocked. Kobe Bryant and not James would probably be the one biting his finger nails . The leagues new slogan might very well change to..... NBA: Where Amazing Happens...........in Miami.
