NBA Free Agency: Who Else Has Had Enough of the Ego-Fest?

Armen DacityJul 6, 2010

Has anyone enjoyed the last week?

The hourly LeBron James uninformative “updates.”

The rumor mill of possible Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh landing spots.

The rampant speculation based upon unnamed sources and Twitter tweets.

The knee-jerk over-paying of second and third tier players.

Does anyone find this fun?

Don’t get me wrong…I understand how this came to be. The system is designed to allow a week like the one we’re having. The media thrives on the opportunity to express theories that will later, if consistent with the outcomes, be hailed as “scoops.” And the fan base, with its fantasy sports mentality and craving for off-season news, has eaten it up like candy.

But is any of this good for the game?

Do you like LeBron James more or less than you did a week ago? I’d say he has come across as an egomaniac. The “King of Akron,” indeed.

I don’t begrudge these players their right to earn as much money as the market will pay them, and to take their time in deciding where they wish to play for the next five to six years. But, surely, there must be a better way to make such a decision. It seems like the free agents have gone out of their way to toy with the hopes of their fan base. I don’t find the teases and coy remarks cute. Rather, they are a waste of my time, and I don’t appreciate that.

So, less than a week into free agency, I like the players a little bit less.

I trust the “experts” a lot less.

And, most of all, rather than increasing my interest in the NBA, I have found myself facing the realization that, if push comes to shove, I can do without all of these overpaid egomaniacs.

At least until football season is over.
