NBA Rumors: The Curious Case of LeBron James
Up until Lebron James actually puts his name on the dotted line we will be bombarded with headlines about where he is rumored to go or where he should go.
As far as where he should go, everyone and their brother are screaming for him to go to the Knicks. Their reasoning, the NBA's biggest star should play in the biggest television market.
Where that holds some truth, Michael Jordan, arguably the biggest sports star ever in the States, and maybe the world, played his initial career in Chicago, then to a lesser extent in Washington, and was still the most recognizable athlete in the country.
So outside of being in the biggest television market, which really only helps the NBA, why else should he sign with the Knicks?
There isn't one.
Now here are some reasons why he shouldn't.
First off, they might have the ugliest uniforms and color combination in the entire league.
Second, they are nowhere near winning a title. Sure, LeBron is still young but why would he want to go to a team that has shown no sign of caliber to make it to the post season. It would be like starting all over.
How long has it taken him to make Cleveland a winner? Yeah, he'll have to do that all over again in New York. If you want a title LeBron, go to L.A.
Third, going to New York won't increase his marketability. Despite what the media tells you, this isn't 1940. We have nationally televised games which mostly feature LeBron, not the Knicks. We also have the Internet, video games, and a various other media outlets to let us know just how great LeBron is. Going to New York won't improve that, just like going to Toronto won't diminish it.
He won't be the top dog in New York.
There is a long line in New York City for love from the fans—In front is Derek Jeter. When it comes to teams, there are the Yankees, Giants, Jets, and Mets—all in front of the Knicks.
Why would Lebron leave Cleveland? He is the toast of the town (sorry Browns) and go to a city where he is just another high priced athlete.
Sure there will be a lot of hoopla when he arrives but no one will care once the Yankees, Giants, and Jets all make a run at the post-season.
Plain and simple, those are my reasons why LeBron James shouldn't go to New York.
My advice Lebron: Go where you actually want to go. Don't get steered around by the media or the league because going to New York would be better for them. Doesn't mean it will be the best fit for you.
