2010 NBA Free Agency: Possible Destinations for Shaquille O'Neal
Among the free agent class of 2010, there are many franchise players that will be available, as well as role players that could help turn a franchise around.
There is also another group of veterans, former franchise players themselves, who will also be taking part of the NBA 2010 Free Agent Bonanza.
This article explains, in my honest opinion, what some of Shaquille O’Neal’s destinations could be (or should be). In all situations, I am assuming Shaq would accept an offer for about somewhere in between half and full of the NBA Mid Level Exemption.
Boston Celtics
There have been rumors that the Boston Celtics might be interested in the Big Diesel.
Boston just recently found out that back-up center Rasheed Wallace will be retiring. Although Kendrick Perkins should be healthy and good to go, they would still need a backup center.
This team is not ready to hand over the gloves, especially since coach Doc Rivers announced earlier today that he will return for another season. Here, Shaquille O’Neal makes a lot of sense to try and make another run at the title.
Paul Pierce opted out of his contract. But in my opinion, he will likely be resigned, which will actually save Boston money to bring back Ray Allen.
Although they might not be any better than last year, they should still be able to put together another impressive season.
Dallas Mavericks
Shaquille O’Neal has stated himself that he would like to play in Dallas.
Marc Cuban and O’Neal have developed a good relationship. After, and during, the 2006 Finals, in which O’Neal was part of a Miami team that ousted Dallas in six games, he continuously stated that he respected Dirk and considered him a fantastic player.
Dallas will also be needing a center (or two) to man the middle come July 1. Brendan Haywood is a free agent, and Erick Dampier will likely be traded.
If the team is able to resign Haywood, who I certainly would pick over Dampier, why not bring in a guy like Shaq as a back-up?
If the price is right, this would at least be an upgrade.
Miami Heat
The Miami Heat last won an NBA championship in a season where Shaquille O’Neal started as center.
With the imminent re-shaping of the entire team, and the possibility of bringing in a two (or three) headed monster to Miami in a combination of Wade, LeBron, Bosh, Amare, and Boozer, among others, what would be better for Shaq than to play with a team that will most likely be the most exciting team in the NBA?
Winning another championship in Miami would not only make his 2006 title more important, but it would also match Kobe Bryant’s championship ring total (just saying!).
Other Teams
Among other teams that would benefit from Shaquille O’Neal are the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, and Utah Jazz.
All of these teams have needs at the center position, but are unlikely to make a move for O’Neal because they either do not have the money to do so or it would not be appealing for the club.
