NBA Free Agency: Orlando, League Will Pass You, So Pull a Rabbit From Your Hat
We all know the following statements to be true:
1) Gumby has trouble finding a hat that fits him.
2) Fred wasn't overly impressed that Scooby Doo could talk.
3) The Orlando Magic will not win a championship if they stand pat.
Orlando is right there. On the cusp. Almost over the hump. They looked unstoppable heading into the Boston series.
And then the Boston series happened. With a free agent pool deep enough to drown Michael Phelps, Orlando fans are left asking, "Now What?"
Do we sit and watch Lebron hand pick his teammates and build a team as if he was starting up a 2K10 franchise? Do we do.....NOTHING ?? No, Orlando has work to do to remain among the elite.
I think resigning JJ Redick is a bigger priority than people are talking about. We've all heard about how Vince vanished and how we can't rely so much on the three pointer.
But a guy named JJ flicked his wrist and the light all in the same playoffs flurry. Please don't let this man walk, not now.
Many seem to think that if Lebron and others switch teams then it will be ok because as the teams they join get stronger the ones they leave will get weaker. WRONG. The problem with this is that these free agents intend on JOINING FORCES.
And it's even scarier now because Dirk and Pierce just opted out.
Teams like Miami, Toronto, and Atlanta were no problem to Orlando as they were. Imagine if those three teams combined their best players and made one team. One word.
Problem.
Bosh will more than likely follow Lebron. They will likely join an East team. Wade will likely stay in Miami but there's a good chance someone will join him. Miami is in the East. Orlando's players have eaten the team's cap. They probably won't be able to throw the bank at someone.
All we really have is trading or selling someone the idea of winning. There have been rumblings about a Chris Paul or Gilbert Arenas trade. I'm iffy on those, but either way it would be a wise idea to dump Carter.
All throughout the playoffs I really felt like we were a true power forward away from being complete. A true PF would make us less predictable. We rely on the outside shooting too much, and we expect Howard to be the sole threat down low.
Carlos Boozer is an under the radar free agent we should pursue. Getting Chris Paul would be an upgrade but I think Nelson is a better playmaker then people give him credit for.
Could you imagine Boozer down low with Howard with the outside shooters we have?
Even if we dumped Carter and a Pietrus or Gortat, picked up Boozer and retained Redick, we could have Nelson, Redick, Lewis, Boozer, and Howard starting.
If we dumped Lewis (which I suggest, as much as I'm a fan) there is a Al Harrington or a Kyle Korver that could be picked up. I think Pietrus could step into the starting lineup if need be.
I'm no GM, but the bottom line is we need to make a move. Not sure how, not sure what. But we need to pull a rabbit outta our hat, or at least chop a few people in half.
Suggestions??
