Cleveland's Coaching Search: Why Byron Scott Is the Man for the Job

Bob EvansJun 29, 2010

One of the most important decisions for the Cleveland Cavaliers organization's future still has yet to be made.

While the rest of the world focuses on LeBron James' big decision, many people have forgotten that the Cleveland Cavaliers are still without a coach.

The Cleveland coaching search took center stage while Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo flirted with the idea of five years and $30 million of Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert's money to leave the Spartan basketball program for the shores of Lake Erie.

But after Izzo decided that he couldn't become the Cavaliers' coach without knowing what James was going to do, the Cleveland coaching search has taken a back burner to all of the free agency talk.

While the return of James is indeed an important piece for the future of the franchise, choosing the right coach to lead the organization may be a more important decision at this point.

Let's face it, if Mike Brown couldn't win an NBA Championship after back-to-back 60-win seasons with King James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, then obviously it takes more than just "any" coach to win a championship.

Choosing the right man to lead the team is just as important as securing James for the next three to seven years.

And that right man for the job is Byron Scott.

Not only isScott available, he has made it known that he is willing to accept the Cleveland Cavaliers job with or without a guarantee of James.

Scott was recently quoted saying "I would coach there without LeBron, but they got a good shot at getting him back."

He also went on to say that the Cleveland job would be better (without LeBron) than when he accepted the Hornets job for the first time.

Scott sounds like a man on a mission to make his presence known again in the NBA, whether he has a superstar on his roster or not.

If the Cavaliers hired Scott, they would be getting much more than just another coach: they would be getting a champion.

Scott is a three-time NBA Champion as a player, and he has also coached the Eastern Conference champions twice in his 10 years as a coach.

His New Jersey Nets' team made it to the NBA Finals in back-to-back seasons, but were unable to conquer the Shaq-Kobe dynasty one year, and the Duncan-led Spurs the following year.

Things have not always been great for Scott as a coach, which is just another reason why I feel that he would be a great coach in Cleveland.

He has been fired from jobs twice, has been a part of teams that have had little to work with on their roster, and also has watched his front office trade off his best players.

He has been through adversity as a coach, and still has a win-loss record of just under .500 in the regular season, and a record of 33-24 in the postseason.

If conquering adversity and having a championship pedigree aren't enough for Gilbert, he needs to look no further than Scott's desire to coach the team.

Like I said before, Scott has said he would coach in Cleveland with or without James, and that comment right there should grab Gilbert's attention.

While so many people are waiting to see what James is doing, and others won't be a part of the franchise without him: a coach with NBA coaching experience wants the job.

Furthermore, Scott has contradicted reports that say he is waiting on Phil Jackson, and basically said that if he had an official offer from Cleveland, he would be the next coach of the Cavaliers.

No offense to Gilbert, but what are you waiting for?

Coach K isn't going to suddenly decide to leave Duke tomorrow, Izzo isn't flying back to Cleveland on your private jet, and assistants Kelvin Sampson and Brian Shaw aren't going to grab LeBron's attention that this organization is continuing to move in its championship aspirations.

The only coach out there that would be able to create a stronger, more championship-ready team is Scott.  And that very man is waiting on an offer from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

With all of the talk of stable organizations, coaches in place, and connections in the NBA, it seems like handing over the reins to Scott would be a no-brainer at this point.

Who knows, maybe Scott's connection with Chris Paul could lead to a long-shot trade of him to Cleveland.

The Cleveland Cavaliers hope to have a coach in place by the beginning of free agency on Thursday, according to Scott.

And if Gilbert wants the type of coach who has a winning attitude, championship pedigree, and the passion to coach in Cleveland: then he needs to look no further then the man saying all the right things.

And that man is Byron Scott.
