2010 NBA Draft Results: Are the Timberwolves the Laughingstock of the NBA?
First it get's controversial. The Minnesota Timberwolves select Wesley Johnson with the No.4 pick in the 2010 NBA draft. I can't say that I'm mad about that, if the Wolves want to be a running/cutting team, Wesley is the perfect guy for that.
It gets quirky from there. The Minnesota Timberwolves have finally provided significant evidence as to what bloggers have been talking about'; that the Wolves are an organization with no direction led by David Kahn, a GM who underwent huge controversy due to taking 2 point guards in the lottery, back to back in the 2009 NBA draft.
The Minnesota Timberwolves go on to select Luke Babbit, a great value at pick No.16, and trade him away for Martell Webster, while I'm already perplexed at something like that, the Timberwolves also threw in Ryan Gomes, a proven role player and veteran in the league. What hurts is that Ryan Gomes contract situation could have landed the Wolves a better deal, and to throw it in with the No.16 pick is completely beyond me.
Oh but it get's worse.
The Minnesota Timberwolves use the No.23 pick to draft Trevor Booker (projected 2nd round to undrafted), and then trade that pick for the No.30 and No.35. That was the best move that David Kahn made, considering that the likes of Hassan Whiteside, Solomon Alabi and Jordan Crawford were still available. But, then does a 180 and drafts Lazar Hayward and Nemanja Bjelica.
The Bjeclica pick could be of value, but Lazar Hayward over Whiteside? Over Alabi? Over Crawford? It completely behooves me.
Ok, now I, a Wolves writer and David Kahn supporter will admit, there's a possibility that David Kahn is in over his head. While he has time to correct it, he needs to undergo some surgery on his methods of NBA value.
I would immediately fire David Kahn on the dot right now if he does not correct this during this offseason. I would hire Kevin Pritchard, seeing that he would make the right decision even if he was getting fired.
The Minnesota Timberwolves need an all star player to compliment Wesley Johnson, preferably a 2-guard that can create their own shot, otherwise the Minnesota Timberwolves fan base will be completely shot down by mediocrity or averageness that you will see on the court
It seems like he's brilliant one minute, and silly the next. A master salesman at times, then a horrible negotiator.
Stockpiling assets? The Wolves ended up with the Wesley Johnson, Martell Webster, Lazar Hayward and Nemanja Bjelica. They lose Luke Babbit and Ryan Gomes? it wouldn't been as bad if you didn't know that Hassan Whiteside and Jordan Crawford could have been Timberwolves players.
It cannot end this way, I just refuse to believe someone is just that blind. If it is indeed over, I have to consider following another team, especially if one of the following doesn't happen:
- Wolves sign a free agent worthy of a max contract
- David Kahn get's fired for not correcting his mistakes.
- Wolves trade for an all-star caliber player, or a future all-star rookie in the draft.
- Ricky Rubio comes this season, and ultimately would mean that he's going to have the ball in his hands all the time, which is why the Wolves needed run/jump/shoot athletes.
- David Kahn finally puts his master plan into effect.
In essence, David Kahn should be fired if this season is filled with false hope and promises.
Everyone, gloat, kick the Wolves fans while their down. Hopefully this will be corrected, if not, the only thing the Wolves have to show for it, is a point guard that isn't guaranteed to play here (more than likely will), a point guard that has some of promise (depending on system), and a gang load of small forwards that can't create their own shot (even though Wesley has potential to one day).
I'm on board. Who's with me?
