Manute Bol's Farewell Legacy…

Jess Matthew BeltranJun 24, 2010

The famous English comic actor Charlie Chaplin once said “I always like walking in the rain, so no one can see me crying.” We are sometimes like a clown we cover our faces, our frowns to make us look happy and that we are okay but deep inside those thick make-ups and masks lays a wounded tiger looking for sympathy. The 7-foot-7 Sudanese and former NBA player Manute Bol doesn’t care about being a sideshow freak going toe to toe in a celebrity boxing against a former football player William “The refrigerator” Perry. Signing a one day contract for the Indianapolis Ice hockey team even though he couldn’t skate and even suiting up as a horse jockey, he never cared about what people say or if most of the people make fun of him with his long and awkward legs he doesn’t care as long as he is earning to give food and shelter to his home country. There was no sadness in Manute’s eyes not a glimpse of it. He was determined and he was happy knowing he was given a deep purpose with his status his height gave him his popularity and it gave him more reason to help with millions of his countrymen died each day because of hunger and civil war. He gave everything and expects nothing in return when he was still playing in the NBA he spent a lot of money in charitable causes and frequently visits Sudanese refugee camps. He doesn’t mind the danger he knows everything in this world is passing and he thrives more on the goodness the people have shown him. He had trouble sleeping for 3 days when the 9/11 incident happened. He cares a lot to people and his heart is as big as his 7-foot frame…
Manute Bol died last June 19 with a kidney failure the world mourns for his death as different tributes shown all over the world. It wasn’t his basketball career that gave him his legacy it is through his untiring and unwavering effort to help that made him a legend.
Sudan should be proud of what Bol have accomplished in his short life span… he has been a role model and an inspiration… The world lost a great hero but his legacy will forever be remembered… That’s why he was called Manute which means “special blessings” …
I wonder how Manute Bol looks in heaven… for sure he will be all smiles… no sadness… not even a glimpse of it.
