2010 NBA Draft Rumors: Timberwolves Rumors Are Just Plain Ridiculous

Timber WolfJun 22, 2010

Just last night and today, check out some of these rumors involving the Timberwolves.

  • The Memphis Grizzlies and Minnesota Timberwolves are close to swapping first-round draft picks, a source with direct knowledge of the situation tells ESPN.com's Andy Katz. The Grizzlies would send their 16th overall pick to Minnesota for the Timberwolves' 25th and 28th picks
  • The Wolves have offered almost everyone on their roster at some point this month, and they have tried almost every angle imaginable to obtain another top-10 pick in this year's draft. Sources close to the Clippers say that Minnesota offered the No. 16 pick and Corey Brewer to the Clippers in exchange for the No. 8 pick. They have offered multiple player-and-pick packages to the Indiana Pacers for the No. 10. Last night, league sources said the Timberwolves had at least agreed to the idea of swapping the No. 16 and Corey Brewer with the Toronto Raptors for the No. 13 and Hedo Turkoglu, a deal that couldn't drop until July 1st because of cap reasons.

  • Nicholas Batum from Portland for the No. 4 pick.
  • Jonny Flynn to Indiana for the No. 10 pick and Jonny Flynn, the No. 16, and No. 23 picks for Danny Granger, T.J. Ford, and No. 10 from the Pacers.

These rumors just stack up, don't they?

I'd like to point out that Nicholas Batum rumor is the biggest BS I've seen in a while. There's no way Wolves even considered that trade—if it's even a true rumor.

David Kahn has stated over and over: It's highly, highly, highly, highly unlikely that they trade up or down from the No. 4 pick. The Wolves have a chance at Derrick Favors, Demarcus Cousins, and Wesley Johnson; there's no reason why the Wolves would trade that for Nicholas Batum from Portland.

That's the dumbest rumor I've heard to date.

Second, the Hedo Turkoglu rumor. That also seems very unlikely.

The Wolves, for one, are a young team, and while they need a wing player, Turkoglu's contract and age completely contradicts what the Wolves are trying to do. While Corey Brewer might be on the trading block, the Toronto Raptors would benefit too greatly from that deal.

Hedo Turkoglu is not the wing player the Wolves would need. The Minnesota Timberwolves need a star wing player to create plays for himself and others and put up points in a hurry.

Hedo doesn't fill that role at all. Plus he's overpaid.

The latest rumor that seems like it could be plausible is the Memphis Grizzlies trade, that the Wolves would trade the No. 16 for the 25th and 28th overall pick.

The only way I see that happening is if the Wolves have some type of master plan in the works to package those picks up.

The Indiana Pacers rumor actually came about, however. In David Kahn's last interview, Kahn stated that a potential deal that would have sent Jonny Flynn for the No. 10 pick was immediately turned down.

Then there were other speculations that the Wolves were trying to trade Flynn and picks for Granger and filling players.

While that trade would benefit the Wolves greatly, there is no way that Indiana goes for that. The deal is detrimental to them, and I don't think that was even put on the table.

The general point is, these rumors are just that: rumors.

Don't believe anything until it happens.
