Wimbledon 2010: Picking All 32 Second Round Matches
After a first round that saw eight seeds fall (with 23 seed John Isner set to play a fifth set in his suspended match) and the defending champion pushed to the brink, I see two more seeds going down in the Round of 64. Here's a complete breakdown of all 32 second-round matches.
After Federer's wake-up call in the first round, Bozoljac won't snap Federer's streak of seven straight finals here.
Arnaud Clement def. Peter Luczak
I didn't expect either of these men to be here, but I'll take Clement to advance thanks to his 3-0 Tour record against Luczak, including a win earlier this year at Indian Wells.
Feliciano Lopez (22) def. Ricardas Berankis
Lopez is a two-time quarterfinalist, while Berankis is coming off a win in his Grand Slam debut.
Jurgen Melzer (16) def. Viktor Troicki
Melzer is 3-0 versus Troicki, including a win in Rotterdam earlier this year in which the Serb retired down 3-0 in the second set.
Tomas Berdych (12) def. Benjamin Becker
Berdych is 3-1 against Becker, including a straight-sets win in their only meeting on grass at Halle in '06.
Denis Istomin def. Rainer Schuettler
I thought Schuettler would beat the 20 seed, Stanislas Wawrinka, in this round thanks to the German's superior grass record this year, which included a semifinals appearance at Queen's Club , where he defeated Gael Monfils and Dudi Sela. But Schuettler actually faces a tougher matchup against the unseeded Istomin, who won their only meeting last year and is coming off a good result at a Wimbledon tune-up himself.
Victor Hanescu (31) def. Marsel Ilhan
Hanescu reached the third round here in '09, while the qualifier is playing in his first Wimbledon.
Nikolay Davydenko (7) def. Daniel Brands
Davydenko reached the third round last year, while Brands is coming off his first win at a major in five career matches.
Novak Djokovic (3) def. Taylor Dent
It's been two years since Djokovic missed a third round at a major.
Albert Montanes (28) def. Brendan Evans
Evans just won his first career match at Wimbledon, while Montanes advanced to the Round of 32 in '09.
Gael Monfils (21) def. Karol Beck
These two split a pair of meetings in '05 with Beck winning in three sets on grass, but Monfils has improved quite a bit since he was 18 and sports an 18-10 record this year, while Beck is 1-5.
Lleyton Hewitt (15) def. Evgeny Korolev
Hewitt beat Korolev in straight sets on clay last year and he's even better on grass.
Mardy Fish def. Florian Mayer
Mayer upset 11 seed Marin Cilic to advance to the second round, but he's 0-2 against Fish.
Michal Przysiezny def. Yen-Hsun Lu
Anyone who beats 17 seed Ivan Ljubicic has to be playing well. We're assured an unseeded player will advance to the fourth round in this section of the draw.
Philipp Kohlschreiber (29) def. Teimuraz Gabashvili
Kohlschreiber defeated Gabashvili, 6-2, 6-3, in a non-Tour event in '05 and the seeded player reached the third round here last year.
Andy Roddick (5) def. Michael Llodra
Roddick is 2-0 versus Llodra.
Michael Russell def. Fabio Fognini
Russell ousted Fognini in the first round of the '08 Australian Open.
Julien Benneteau (32) def. Andreas Beck
Benneteau has slightly more experience at Wimbledon, having reached the second round for the third time now, and he is 19-14 this year, while Beck is 7-9.
Andreas Seppi def. Tobias Kamke
I didn't see this matchup coming, but after upsetting 19 seed Nicolas Almagro, Seppi should continue to move on. He now faces Kamke, who he beat in the first round of Wimbledon two years ago.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (10) def. Alexandr Dolgopolov
Tsonga has reached the third round in both of his prior Wimbledons.
Xavier Malisse def. Julian Reister
After taking down 14 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero in the first round, Malisse should be able to get past No. 129 Reister.
Sam Querrey (18) def. Ivan Dodig
Querrey is playing well this year, having won three titles, including the warm-up at Queen's Club, so he should be able to get past the qualifier.
Illya Marchenko def. Gilles Simon (26)
Simon is just 3-5 this year thanks to a patella tendon injury along with tendinitis.
Andy Murray (4) def. Jarkko Nieminen
Murray has defeated Nieminem both times they've played.
Robin Soderling (6) def. Marcel Granollers
My worst pick of the first round was taking Robby Ginepri over Soderling. The Sweed absolutely dominated the American in straight sets and looks like he's not going to slow down after reaching the finals at the French. He's 3-1 versus Granollers and while the Spaniard did win the most recent meeting in five sets in the first round of this year's Australian, Soderling took their only grass-court matchup—a four-setter in this round at Wimbledon '09.
Martin Fischer def. Thomaz Bellucci (25)
Bellucci's weakest surface is grass, while Fischer hasn't dropped a set en route to winning four straight matches (including three in qualifying) at the All England Club this past week. Fischer also defeated Bellucci in a non-Tour match on hard courts last year.
Lukas Lacko def. Jeremy Chardy
I thought Chardy actually would have had a better shot against 24 seed Marcos Baghdatis, but Lacko, who upset the man from Cyprus in the first round, is 2-0 versus Chardy in '10, including a straight-sets win at Halle earlier this month.
David Ferrer (9) def. Florent Serra
Ferrer is 3-0 lifetime versus Serra.
Mikhail Youzhny (13) def. Paul-Henri Mathieu
Youzhny is 5-1 against Mathieu, including a first-round win at last year's U.S. Open and a victory in their only meeting on grass, back in '03.
Nicolas Mahut def. Santiago Giraldo
Both of these first-round matches were suspended because of darkness after four sets (a decision I agree with because you don't want to have to stop play at four-all in the fifth), so I'll stick with my original picks of Mahut over 23 seed John Isner and Giraldo over Thiemo De Bakker. For the potential second-round match, I like Mahut because he defeated Giraldo in their only grass-court meeting in the second round of qualifying at last year's Queen's Club event.
Philipp Petzschner (33) def. Lukasz Kubot
Petzschner should be able to reach the third round for the second straight year.
Rafael Nadal (2) def. Robin Haase
Nadal has won more matches this year (41) than Haase has won in his career (32).
