Toronto Raptors: Where Problems at the Wing Happen

Sachin AroraJun 11, 2010

The Toronto Raptors biggest weakness is the wing position. The main wing rotation players consist of Sonny Weems, DeMar DeRozan, Hedo Turkoglu, Marco Bellineli and Antoine Wright. Now don't get me wrong, these guys are all pretty solid players and are pretty productive when going well. But do we really have a great wing player? One who can create his own shot, one who can help out Bosh? No. Bosh requested that we get a player who can create his own shot, if we want a shot at re-signing him.

At the shooting guard position, we seem to be okay with the two young guns in DeMar DeRozan and Sonny Weems, and they are only going to get better. But how long can we afford to wait? Raptors fans are sick of waiting. We want to seem them win now.

At the small forward position, Hedo Turkoglu was the main player, and he requested a trade this offseason because he's clearly unhappy in Toronto. That's very immature and frankly, he should be sucking it up and playing his hardest regardless considering the money he's making. But that's besides the point, he's not a productive player with the Raptors and that's the bottom line. Then there's Antoine Wright. He's a great defender, but is nothing more than a role player. Also, he's a free agent, which doesn't help the situation too much. He most likely won't be returning.

So, what do the Raptors do? The first step will be to try and acquire a small forward, who will fill that characteristic of being able to create his own shot. A package could include Hedo Turkoglu, Sonny Weems, and let's say the 13th pick for somebody like Andre Iguodala or Rudy Gay.

A trade like this would help our wing position and DeMar DeRozan will still be able to develop.

If we keep Sonny, then he can be a great role player as well, and will be needed if Antoine Wright walks. But could we get the type of player we need for Hedo and the 13th?

Let's see if Bryan Colangelo is really a great GM.
