Ricky Rubio Has Verbally Committed, Now Wolves Must Improve. How?

Timber WolfJun 4, 2010

Finally, and I've told numerous people hundred's of times, that Rubio will warm up (no pun intended) to joining the Timberwolves.

“It’s a young team that still needs to grow, that lacks experience now and even though this year it hasn’t achieved many victories the players are evolving, and that’s important,” said the 6-foot-2 point guard, who described himself as a player in the mold of Magic Johnson and Steve Nash.

Of course, now I would like ESPN to update their future power rankings, and to solidify that Rubio would join the Wolves, further quotes.

He turns down the Wolves offer for 2 seasons in Barcelona, and it has worked out, especially with his verbal commitment.

He has already won the Euroleague title, has a silver medal and has numerous Euroleague awards. It's great to know this information now, this should provide the Wolves with a jolt of energy to provide the talent that Rubio should play with.

"They have the best possibility because they hold my rights, and they've shown me how much they want me," he said. "And for that, I have to be thankful toward them."

David Kahn, the president of basketball operations has said that Ricky and head coach Kurt Rambis hit it off right away.

Kurt Rambis runs a triangle offense, similar to what offense's run in the Euroleauges, a big reason for Pau Gasol's emergence once traded to the Lakers, the only other team that runs that offense.

"It was consistent with everything we've said all along," Kahn said. "I fully expect to see Ricky in a Wolves uniform after next season." He had a good impression of Minnesota when he visited last summer. "It was summer, with nice weather, a lot of lakes and it was nice," Rubio said. "I know they like their sports in Minnesota."

Now, how do the Wolves improve?

It's great that Rubio has acknowledged that the Wolves are young, and that they are gaining valuable experience.

To make Rubio go? His teammates have to be able to utilize his passing ability. He needs 3 point shooters, athletic wing players, and one athletic big and passing big.

Currently, the Wolves have two 3 point shooters, one athletic wing player, and a do it all big. Corey Brewer, Wayne Ellington, Darko Milicic and Kevin Love are perfect fits as of now. Jonny Flynn as his backup, Ryan Hollins are decent fits as well.

He also needs to have a wing player that can create his own shot efficiently. Most of these problems can be solved through this draft.

They currently have the No. 4, No. 16 and No. 23 picks in this upcoming draft. There should be a combination of these certain players on the Wolves radar. Evan Turner, Xavier Henry, Paul George, and Jordan Crawford.

Why?

All four of these players can, or have the potential to create their own shot. Evan Turner, and Jordan Crawford create their own shot with incredible ease.

Paul George and Xavier Henry are both great shooters, mature and are very athletic.

All wing players, something that the Wolves very much lack. Picks will more than likely be packaged up to move up, in a perfect offseason, the Wolves gain the No. 2 pick, and possibly the 11th or 12th pick.

Drafting Evan Turner and say Paul George (who's stock has went waay up lately), would put the Wolves in a great position to make an impact for improvement.

The Wolves will still need an athletic big that's capable of catching and finishing with efficiency.

I won't go into too much depth due to the lack of knowledge being that there's 20 some odd days from the NBA draft.
