Why LeBron Compares to Kobe? Well, Not Yet!

Sylvanus UagborJun 3, 2010

Listen, for all the prognosticators and critics that believe LeBron James as surpassed Kobe Bryant in the world of Basketball–you’ve been sadly mistaken.  I’m an avid LeBron James fan–along with Kobe Bryant, but James body of work doesn’t compare. Think about it! Kobe has the championship rings and the killer instinct to decimate the defense. Keep in mind, I’m not taking anything away from LeBron, but Kobe’s mental ability is far greater than that of James.  Yes, LeBron has won the MVP award, twice. Yes, LeBron averages close to a triple-double every season, but his incapability to carry his team to the upper echelon, has or will put a stain on his career. If he leaves Cleveland, it’ll only stretch his chances to win a championship, even longer.

Here’s some food for thought: Think about how long it takes for a team to surround a star player with quality, complementary players? Kobe finally won a championship last year—after 2-3 tumultuous years with players such as Kwame Brown and Vladamir Radmonavic. If LeBron departs for New Jersey/Brooklyn or New York, it’ll only be for the money, and not the growth of the team. The Knicks may be able to afford another superstar, but who wants to play with LeBron? Complimentary players such as Mo Williams, Antawn Jamison, etc.—vanish when LeBron doesn’t have a good shooting exploration.

When  comparing LeBron to Kobe, you have to consider the performance in pressure moments. Who delivers in the clutch?  When you need consistent points, whom can you rely on? And lastly, who yearns more from his teammates in the playoffs? LeBron lacks the mid-range game--and with his physique, his low post game could be better.

James came into the league with success ironed on his back and has exceeded every statistical expectation there is—hypo ethically speaking, but what defines greatness? Championship rings! Kobe, M.J, Magic, Bird, Shaq, Wilt, Russell! The list goes on.

LeBron will eventually get it, but as long as Kobe plays with heart and intensity. As you watch the Lakers dominate the Celtics in Game 1 of the finals, did it ever cross your mind, that basketball means more to Kobe than performing on stage with Drake?
