The Lakers Don't Have That Smack Down Mentality

Tristan SatherContributor IJune 3, 2010

Β In 2008 the Lakers were annihilated in game 6 by 40 points. They took away the Lakers' self-esteem while Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins made Pau look soft. The Lakers still have that bitter taste in their mouth and are looking to redeem themselves. The energy in the building was overwhelming for the Lakers in game 6, which caused them to be out of sync.Β

Phil Jackson said "We don't have a smack down mentality, we don't go out their and smack people around." Bill Plaschke said on Around The Horn, "This is not about the Celtics, usually it's about the other team. This time it's about the Lakers." Phil is telling the Lakers, he is reminding them to get tougher this is directly a message to Pau Gasol.

Kobe was asked after game 6 in 2008, "Assuming Andrew Bynum is back next year, healthy, will he answer a lot of the problems you faced against the Celtics?" Kobe answered, "Rebounding and shot-blocking in the middle." It's 2010, since then the Lakers have won a championship. Bynum didn't have a huge impact to say the least, he averaged nine points, which shows he wasn't the missing ingredient. Even without Bynum, the Lakers could've easily tied it up 2-2 but instead they blew a 20 point lead and the series went 3-1 to Boston.

Keys To The Series

The Lakers are going to have to play good pick and roll defense, because the Celtics run a double on ball screen.Β

It is so critical for Ron Artest to take Paul Pierce out of his comfort zone, because he is only player on the Celtics that can create his own shot.

Production from their role players Lamar Odom, Derek Fisher, Ron Artest and Andrew Bynum, especially on the road.

Defensive intensity as Andrew Bynum said "This is going to be a defensive battle whoever plays defense will come out on top."

The most important match-up of the series Kevin Garnett vs Pau Gasol, Pau was asked Phil said The most intrigued match-up in this series was yourself and Garnett, what do you have to do to make it go in your favour? Pau answered "I think one of the main things is just to be aggressive and just to be in attack mode."
