Heat Must Overcome Another Draft Disaster to Keep Dwyane Wade
The Miami Heat’s draft selections since 2003, in and out of the lottery, have been less than stellar.
Actually, less than stellar might be the understatement of the decade, as inadequate and underwhelming as the picks themselves.
When your greatest pick since nabbing Dwayne Wade in the 2003 draft only outdid his on the field failures by his off the field drama---needing to go to rehab after a series of infamous tweets and a picture that seemed to show the troubled Michael Beasley with a bag of marijuana---there is little words to explain the way The Heat have repeatedly blundered during the offseason.
According the Miami Herald, since 2004 only Mario Chambers, has played his rookie season after being drafted in the second round.
In order to woo Wade back the Heat will need to bring in players that can find a spot in the rotation within the first couple of months of the 2010-2011 season. The Heat will have a great chance to do so with a three picks in the second round in the 2010 draft.
The Heat has looked into two dozen prospects to bring more support to Wade to keep him from fleeing town come July.
The Heat has focused a lot of its attention on Houston point guard Aubrey Coleman who very unceremoniously and modestly led Division I in scoring. Aubrey has continuously been ignored by clubs and was not invited to the NBA combine.
Coleman would be a great option to take some of the load off of Wade not only by scoring but if correctly groomed by Wade and Pat Riley to help take more of a lead in the ball control of the team to keep Wade from having to score 48 points to keep the Heat in playoff games.
The Heat must also begin to look for centers to take over the load from Jermaine O’Neal who had streaky play throughout the regular season and entirely disappeared from the playoffs for The Heat during the Celtics series.
Undoubtedly The Heat will have to ultimately bring in more experienced players to help Wade down the stretch but the draft is likely to create the foundation that shows Wade the Heat has a commitment to winning and a plan beyond depending on their virtuoso scorer.
