Broadway Or Bust: What The Knicks Have To Do To Make A Winning Team

Michael HershmanMay 18, 2010

The New York Knicks are a franchise that have made pretty bad decisions in the past including the hiring of Isaiah Thomas and bringing in Tracy McGrady from the Rockets.

But the Knicks have one thing that only several other teams have in the NBA. Loads of cap space.

The Knicks have cleared out all this cap space in hopes of acquiring a big name free agent in the 2010 offseason such as Lebron James or Dwayne Wade.

Lets breakdown the Knicks chances of luring Lebron to the Big Apple.

Other possible destinations for the Cavs superstar besides New York are Miami, Chicago, LA, New Jersey, or his current team, the Cavaliers.

The big attraction in Miami is obviously Dwayne Wade who can also opt of his current contract and become a free agent this year.

If the Heat were to re-sign Wade, Lebron would create a mega-duo with him and make things even hotter in Miami.

But the Heat have a coach who has not had tons of playoff experience and does not have a great record of winning.

But the Knicks do.

Mike D'Antoni coached a very sucessful Suns team a few years back and has a record of winning unlike Lebron's other suitors current coaches (none of those teams even have a coach right now).

So that's going to be a key factor on where Lebron decides to head in the '10-11 season.

Now, people might say teams like the Bulls and Clippers would give Lebron a great supporting cast with young stars waiting to bud.

But the Knicks can compete well with these teams.

The Knicks have Toney Douglas, a young point guard who has a super-smooth shot and great playmaking abilities.

Danilo Gallanari at one point last year led the NBA in 3-point field goals made. But Danilo has to work on being more consistent on his shooting but could really help Lebron get some help on the scoring side of the game.

Now, Chris Bosh could be involved in a sign-and-trade deal for David Lee between the Raptors and the Knicks but either player would help tremendously on the defensive end and with scoring and rebounding.

Now, if the Knicks do not gain Lebron, their next most likely option will be Dwayne Wade depending on whether or not he wants to stay in Miami.

So then, we look at players like Joe Johnson and Amare Stoudamire.

Joe Johnson played well this past season averaging 18 points and 5 assists a game.

But that won't be enough to make the Knicks a playoff team.

New York might want to look into bringing in a big man into the city like Amare or maybe even Carlos Boozer.

Along with that, the Knicks will have to re-sign many players from the 09-10 season such as Al Harrington and Chris Duhon.

My view on the Knick's offseason is if they don't bring either Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, or Chris Bosh to the Knicks, this entire experiment has failed.

The Knicks would have not gotten a star player to end their playoff drought and have only improved their team's talent by a thin margin.

When July 1st comes, the NBA free agency will be a fiasco and it will be one interesting one too.
