NBA Spread Picks: Magic Vs. Hawks, Lakers-Jazz

Joe DuffyMay 10, 2010

It’s “Elimination Night” on NBA Playoff odds. Two games are on tap this evening, and both could be the final games of the series. First, the Orlando Magic take a 3-0 lead into Atlanta to face the Hawks. Then, the Utah Jazz will try to climb out of an 0-3 hole when the Lakers visit town. Here are today’s free picks for your NBA matchups and picks from ScoresOddsPicks:

Orlando Magic (-6.5) at Atlanta Hawks – 8:00 p.m. ET

Orlando is absolutely out of control right now. It topped the Hawks 105-75 in Game 3 to grab a stranglehold on the series. The Magic have won 15 consecutive games, not to mention are enjoying a sensational 12-1 run on NBA odds. Orlando has completely embarrassed Atlanta in this series, winning by an average of 29 points per game. Closing out a series on the road shouldn’t pose much of a problem—the Magic are 5-0 both straight up and against the spread in their last five road games.

Atlanta is simply overmatched, but it’s not like the Hawks were getting the job done against Milwaukee, either. In fact, the team is just 2-6 on NBA betting lines in its last eight games. The Hawks have to hope home-court advantage comes through, as they are a solid 6-4 against the spread in their past 10 games in Atlanta.

It might feel crazy to take a road team by 6.5 points, but Atlanta has given sports betting fans no reason to believe it can keep this within double digits. Ride Orlando until the magic runs out.

Pick: Orlando

LA Lakers at Utah Jazz (-2.5) – 10:30 p.m. ET

The Lakers are starting to put things together on the court, winning Game 3 of this series 111-110 to notch their seventh win in the past 10 games. That success hasn’t carried over to the sportsbook, however—Los Angeles is a subpar 4-5-1 against the spread in its last 10 games. The Lakers have covered back-to-back games, though. Winning on the road has been much trickier, as the Lakers are 4-6 straight up and 4-5-1 ATS in their past 10 games away from home.

Utah has just four wins in its last 10 games. The Jazz haven’t been much better against the spread, splitting their past 10 outings. If Utah wants to extend the series, it has to hope it can get home-court advantage going—the Jazz are 8-2 straight up and 6-4 against the spread in their past 10 home games.

There’s little doubt the Lakers will finish off this series—it just won’t be tonight. Utah will get big games from Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams, and ride the crowd to its final victory of the year.

Pick: Utah
