Aussie Open: Federer Claims 16th Grand Slam Despite Murray's Will To Win
On a rainy night in Melbourne, Australia, two great tennis players, Andy Murray and Roger Federer, face off in the Australian Open Final 2010. The win didn't mean much to Federer, but it meant the world to Andy Murray.
Losing in the 2008 U.S. Open to Federer, Murray wanted revenge and wanted to win this one for Britain. But he couldn't prevail and win a Grand Slam for Britain, losing in straight sets to Federer.
Federer wins No. 16, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6. Here's a recap of the men's Australian Open final.
SET ONE
Both players start off very shaky, and both seem to show a lot of nerves. Murray had shown the most though, since this was the biggest match of his career.
Federer opens up the match and gets a very easy break on Murray to start off on a easy 2-0 lead. Murray breaks right back and holds his serve.
Murray kept on hold until his serves started to get a little shaky when he was on serve at 3-4, being broken to give Federer a 5-3 lead.
Murray had his second serves going 75-80 mph, but it cost him a lot of points in this first set, allowing Federer to take this set 6-3.
SET TWO
This set was very crucial for Murray because if Federer beats him in this set, all the momentum goes to Federer, and Murray loses all his hope in winning this match. Murray has to focus much more, get those first serves in, and win those points.
Murray starts off this set holding on his serve very easily. Murray keeps letting Federer go on offence, which leads him to give up on some points.
Murray, serving at 1-1 on serve, keeps making his mistakes with unforced errors and losing on second serves to allow Federer to get an early break in this second set.
Murray is getting way too tight, which gets Federer to go more on the offensive side and win his points easily.
Murray saves some break points to hold. He keeps continuing to struggle on his serve and double faults a few times. He was very lucky to hold his serve that game and is still down a break at 2-3, with Federer serving.
A break down at 2-4, Murray starts off really bad on his serve and gets down 0-40, but fights right back, and holds his serve. Murray can't hold up that strong comeback in that game and lets Federer get an easy hold.
It looks very bad here for Murray, with Federer taking the second set 6-4 and, up two sets to love, only needing one more set to win the championship.
SET THREE
Murray has found absolutely nothing to beat Federer in this championship, which has cost him to be down two sets to love. He is making too many mistakes on his serves, still with winning very few points on his second serve.
Murray had only served 54 percent first serves in the second set and won most. He keeps making too many mistakes on his forehand, too, being very lazy and just letting Federer win easy points.
Murray needs to attack much more and serve better in this third set because if he doesn't, the championship is going to Federer.
Murray starts off this third set with an easy hold and tries to improve by finding out what he can do to beat Federer. Murray seems to improve a bit, by getting Federer to get a little more on the defensive side and allowing himself to get his first break point since the first set.
He forces the game into deuce but can't break Federer, which makes it still on serve at 1-1.
At 2-2, with Murray on serve, it seems like he is starting to hurt. After points, Murray would start to grab his quad and seem like he was done. He holds his serve, though, and still fights to stay in this match.
He finally gets a break since the first set to get a 4-2 lead on his serve. After the break, Murray finally gets the crowd going with a big "Come on!"
Murray is starting to feel some groove now, to now have a 5-2 lead in the third set, a great job by him now that he is finding out how to attack Federer now and make this match a little more interesting. He makes much better movement, more winners, and is doing much better on his second serve.
Though Murray is doing much better on these things, he forgot that he still has to fight to win this set and lets Federer hold his serve and break him to make it back on serve in this third set.
Federer holds his serve again to make it a 5-5 game on serve in this third set. It is a very tense game with Andy serving at 5-5 with Federer fighting to get a break, but Andy getting lucky on some points to hold his serve.
Federer gets an easy hold to turn this set into a tie break.
The tie break was a very tense part of the match, lasting 20 minutes long but Federer prevailing and winning Grand Slam No. 16.
