The US Open is just one day away.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner may not be competing, but the tournament still promises to be exciting.

Carlos Alcaraz is looking to become the first man ever to repeat as Grand Slam champion on all three surfaces, while Novak Djokovic is still searching for an elusive record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.

Looming in the distance is Ben Shelton, looking to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick triumphed here in 2003.

In the women's draw, Aryna Sabalenka is seeking to become the third woman in the Open Era (since 1968) to three-peat at the US Open.

Carlos Alcaraz enters the US Open aiming to become the second man this century to win consecutive US Open titles (Roger Federer).

However, he faces a unique challenge: no man has won the US Open without playing either the Canadian or Cincinnati Open since 1990. Alcaraz missed both due to injury, making his path especially tough.

His first major test could come in the Round of 16 against Alexander Bublik, followed by potential clashes with Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals and Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

Djokovic, chasing a record 25th Grand Slam, has a favorable draw early on. He's expected to meet Brandon Nakashima in the Round of 16 before facing tougher opponents like Daniil Medvedev and possibly Alcaraz en route to the final.

It's never wise to count out Djokovic, especially in a draw without top-ranked Jannik Sinner.

However, the 39-year-old Serbian struggled with heat and humidity at the Cincinnati Open, and this week he cut a practice short due to heat concerns.

Top-seed Alexander Zverev has perhaps the most favorable projected path. It's quite possible he reaches the Round of 16 by dropping only one set.

Zverev gets to avoid Djokovic and Alcaraz until the final.

Meanwhile, Ben Shelton is hoping to become the first American man to win a major since Andy Roddick triumphed at the 2003 US Open.

His path is difficult, starting with Tallon Griekspoor, then likely Hubert Hurkacz in the second round.

However, if he overcomes those challenges and a likely round-of-16 thrilling showdown with Frenchman Arthur Fils, the tournament could be his breakthrough moment, particularly with Djokovic and Alcaraz not performing at their best.

Sabalenka is not expected to face many challenges until the Round of 16, where a projected matchup against Diana Shnaider awaits.

Shnaider stunned Sabalenka in the 2026 French Open quarterfinal and enters the US Open in impressive form.

The world No. 1 should still be expected to prevail but will likely need to go through 2026 Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova and 3-seed Jessica Pegula just to reach the final.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff is setting her sights on ending the year with her third career Grand Slam title.

Gauff arrives on a high after her Cincinnati Open triumph, where she dropped just one set on her path to the trophy.

Her real test is expected to begin in the Round of 16, with formidable opponents like Belinda Bencic or Madison Keys likely waiting.

The road won't get any smoother from there—Elena Rybakina or Naomi Osaka could be looming in the quarterfinals, promising even more thrilling matchups.

But with Gauff in such outstanding form, a deep run seems not only possible but probable.

While Sabalenka and Gauff enter as the top two favorites, there are plenty of other contenders capable of deep runs, including six-time major champion Iga Swiatek, Rybakina, Osaka, and Jessica Pegula.
