There are certain phrases or sentences in life that you say because they are now true but they seem odd to utter because they don't fit the normal pattern you have always been so used to.  Take, for example, having to pay almost $5 a gallon for gas like we did here in the California a few years ago.

I never thought I'd say that.

Then, a few years later, the price dropped to $1.60!

I never thought I'd say that.

See how this works?

Did you know that right now, if you wanted to visit the Disneyland parks in Anaheim, it would cost you $97.00 per person over the age of 10! A family of four is going to drop $388.00 just for the privilege to get in to Disneyland. It costs even more before your kids let you leave.

I never thought I'd say that.

Although you can apply the phrase to several areas of life—gas, Disneyland, and more — it has a permenant residence in sports.

The Steelers look like a mediocre team in 2009 after winning it all last year.

I never thought I'd say that.

The Dodgers haven't seen the World Series since 1988!

I never thought I'd say that.

Michael Jordan is quitting basketball to play baseball, really?

I never thought I'd say that.

This is fun.  I can't stop.

Ben Johnson's amazing victory over Carl Lewis in 1988 was because he cheated?

I never thought I'd say that.

The Clippers might actually be better with Marcus Camby over Elton Brand!

I never thought I'd say that.

Lacrosse has a professional league and is amazing to watch!

I never thought I'd say that.

Women box, and box well!

I never thought I'd say that.

Tiger Woods would fall from grace.  The fall would be quick and messy, costing him endorsements and his marriage.

No way.  Not possible.  Not in 100 years.

It happened though, didn't it?

I never thought I'd say that.

Sometimes the phrase has a negative connotation, like Ben Johnson's steroids revelation and Tiger's collapse, to name just a few. There is nothing more satisfying to a sports fan however than when you get to apply that phrase in the positive.

The Los Angeles Clippers are a better team than the New York Knicks.

In fact, they are a better team than half the teams they will be playing on this recent road trip.

I never thought I'd say that.

The Clippers continue their push towards .500 on their "Road to Redemption Tour." The team has a stated goal to be at .500 or better before the No. 1 pick in the draft hits the court.

It's amazing how a single player, the right player, can have a significant impact on the fortunes of a team. Chauncy Billups to the Nuggets, Tim Duncan to the Spurs, and Magic Johnson to the Lakers all come to mind.

I'm not saying Blake Griffin is in that category, but I am saying he might be.  Add the the right player, at the right time to the right team, and you get an immediate and very positive return.  I have a feeling Griffin is that player, the Clippers are that team, and this is the right time.

Wow, the Clippers are the right team.

I never thought I'd say that.
