Former Penn State and Oakland Raiders quarterback Matt McGloin had a rough outing in the XFL on Saturday.
The 30-year-old starter for the New York Guardians couldn't muster any points in the first half, and when asked what the team needed to correct at halftime, he directed the blame at head coach Kevin Gilbride.
ESPN @espnMatt McGloin at halftime to @diannaESPN: "We need to change the whole entire gameplan." Head coach Kevin Gilbride: "I need to go talk to him & figure out what the problem is because he needs to play better." Then McGloin threw a pick-six on their next drive. @xfl2020 https://t.co/R2ssCwfzfx
"We need to change the whole entire game plan," McGloin said as he walked off the field. "It's embarrassing for us as an offense."
The two-time Super Bowl-winning former offensive coordinator with the New York Giants responded quickly, urging his quarterback to play better rather than deflect blame. That didn't solve the Guardians' issues, though, as McGloin threw a pick-six on his next drive and was promptly benched in favor of Marquise Williams.
McGloin, who went undrafted in 2013 and last played with the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad in 2018, finished the day 8-of-19 for 44 yards and two interceptions as the DC Defenders shut out New York 27-0.
McGloin had a solid debut in Week 1 during a 23-3 win over the Tampa Bay Vipers, going 15-of-29 for 182 passing yards and two total touchdowns. It's unclear who will get the start in Week 3 versus the St. Louis BattleHawks, who are led by former Ole Miss QB Jordan Ta'amu.
