The defending Go Bowling at The Glen champion will start in prime position to defend his crown.

Elliott won the event for the first time in his career last year, leading for 52 of the 90 laps. And Saturday, the No. 9 car bested the field with a time of 1:09:287, which put him 0.083 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher:

According to Hendrick Motorsports, the 23-year-old Elliott is the youngest driver to win the pole at Watkins Glen. It marked Elliott's seventh career pole and third of the season.

As Fox Sports' Bob Pockrass pointed out, it was a strong day of qualifying for Hendrick Motorsports:

Interestingly enough, this is the third time Elliott and Byron have started in the front row together this season. The previous occurrences came when Elliott won the pole at the Food City 500 in April and the Gander RV 400 in May.

Byron finished eighth at Watkins Glen as a rookie last year.

After winning the race in 2017 and finishing second to Elliott last year, Truex will start near the front in fourth. The No. 19 car is fifth in the points standings.

The 2019 Go Bowling at The Glen is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday.
