6'8" Rugby Player Jordan Mailata Picked by Eagles in 2018 NFL Draft

The Philadelphia Eagles took a major flier with their final pick of the 2018 NFL draft on Saturday.

Following a trade up to No. 233 overall in the seventh round, the defending Super Bowl champions selected offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, an Australian rugby player who previously suited up for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the National Rugby League.

Mailata, who is listed at 6'8" and 346 pounds, has never played a down of professional football and said before the draft that he wasn't expecting to hear his name called.

"To be honest, I'm not expecting to be drafted," Mailata told NFL.com's Andy Fenelon. "I'll just see how it goes. If I get drafted, I get drafted. I don't want to get my hopes up."

However, the 20-year-old caught the Eagles' eye after he logged a 5.12-second 40-yard dash and 4.67 short-shuttle time. According to Fenelon, Philadelphia was one of eight teams that met with Mailata before the draft.

Mailata was one of two offensive linemen the Eagles selected on Saturday. The first was TCU's Matt Pryor, a 6'7", 332-pound mauler who can play guard or tackle at the next level.

Philadelphia also added Pittsburgh cornerback Avonte Maddox (Round 4) and Florida State edge-rusher Josh Sweat (Round 4) on Saturday after selecting South Dakota State tight end Dallas Goedert in the second round on Friday.
