Projecting Where Nick Chubb Will Land After Day 1 of 2018 NFL Draft
Georgia running back Nick Chubb turned plenty of heads as a college football star, but he didn't do enough to merit an NFL team using a first-round selection on him Thursday.
That means a number of front offices will have the opportunity to add one of college football's most productive playmakers to their roster with a second-round pick or later.
While the clear downside with Chubb is health concerns after he damaged his knee ligaments in 2015 and underwent season-ending surgery, he amassed 1,547 rushing yards and 16 total touchdowns as the 2014 SEC Freshman of the Year. He also ran for 1,130 yards in 2016 and helped the Bulldogs reach the College Football Playoff National Championship Game with 1,345 rushing yards in 2017.
Bleacher Report's Matt Miller ranked Chubb as the sixth-best running back prospect in the 2018 draft and pointed to "the size and power to be an effective runner between the tackles."
Miller projected the Georgia product as a mid-second-round pick and offered Jay Ajayi as a pro comparison, but he also pointed to worries about his lack of "explosiveness and speed to turn the corner" following his knee injury and surgery.
By balancing the combination of the upside Chubb's productivity suggests and worries about his speed and effectiveness following his injury, the thought here is he will go to a team that needs to bolster its rushing attack but won't necessarily ask him to be the every-down back.
The Indianapolis Colts and Washington both stand out as potential landing spots.
Indianapolis no longer has Frank Gore in the backfield after he signed with the Miami Dolphins this offseason, and it was a disappointing 22nd in the NFL in rushing yards a year ago. Marlon Mack figures to be a primary ball-carrier in 2018, but Chubb would give them someone who can help spell Mack and pick up yardage near the goal line and between the tackles.
As for Washington, it was a mere 28th in the league in rushing yards and could use another piece alongside Rob Kelley, Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine as it shifts into the Alex Smith era.
