Peter King: John Dorsey's Friend Predicts Josh Allen, Saquon Barkley for Browns

Tyler ConwayApr 2, 2018

A friend of Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey told Peter King of The MMQB he expects the team to select Josh Allen and Saquon Barkley with the No. 1 and No. 4 picks, respectively, in this month's draft.

"I would be surprised if he traded down," the friend said. "This would be his chance to take his two offensive cornerstones for the next eight or 10 years."

The Browns are believed to be choosing between Allen and Sam Darnold with the top selection. The Barkley pick will be based on availability but is seemingly a no brainer, given many feel the Penn State product is the best player in this class.

Allen's selection with the top overall pick would be an all-in bet on potential, rather than a product of his brilliance at Wyoming. The 6'5", 233-pound prototype threw for 5,066 yards and 44 touchdowns against 21 interceptions during his collegiate career, finishing with a 56.2 completion percentage.

Darnold threw for more yards (7,229) and touchdowns (57) while completing nearly nine percent more passes (64.9) than Allen. The USC product also played in a vastly more difficult conference and had a lower interception rate—despite a propensity for turnovers being a "knock" on his scouting report.

Allen's ascent up draft boards is based almost entirely on his prototypical size and big arm, which arguably gives him a higher bust potential than Darnold or UCLA's Josh Rosen. There is also an interesting contrast to be made between Allen and Louisville's Lamar Jackson, who was more productive in college and completed a similar percentage of his passes but has been asked by teams to try out playing receiver.

Barkley rushed for 1,000 yards in each of his three seasons at Penn State and is the school's all-time leader in all-purpose yards. He's arguably the most complete running back prospect in recent memory and has an outside shot to be the first to go No. 1 overall since Ki-Jana Carter in 1995.
