NCAA Championship Game Time: Villanova vs. Michigan 2018 Start Time, TV Info

Joe TanseyApr 2, 2018

The Villanova Wildcats are looking to become the second program to win multiple titles this decade Monday night, as they face the Michigan Wolverines in the NCAA men's basketball tournament final.

Since Florida won back-to-back championships in 2006 and 2007, only Duke, North Carolina and UConn have more than one title to their name.

With a victory at the Alamodome, the Wildcats would be the eighth program to reach three national championships, joining UCLA, Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, Indiana, UConn and Kansas.

Villanova Needs to Stop Wagner in Order to Achieve Victory

The top challenge facing Villanova Monday is how to defend Michigan forward Moritz Wagner.

The German-born big man is unlike any frontcourt player the Wildcats faced this season, as he possesses the ability to drift out behind the three-point line and knock down shots.

Instead of trying to hold Wagner to zero points, Jay Wright is hoping the Wildcats can minimize his impact, as the Michigan man hits a few field goals, per Land of 10's Stephen Pianovich.

"I'll be honest with you we're still watching film. I'm not sure I've got the answer yet. We have a little bit of a plan in mind," Wright said. "... I think he's one of those players that you're not going to shut him down. You just gotta hope you can minimize his influence on the game. I think that's what we're going to try to do.”

When Wagner is in the post in a more natural spot for a forward, Villanova has a trio of players ready to stop him from attacking the rim in Omari Spellman, Eric Paschall and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree.

If Villanova's three-headed post presence affects Wagner's shots in the post and keeps the Wolverines from earning second-chance opportunities, it should keep the Big Ten tournament champion out of a rhythm.

Offensively, the Wildcats can employ the same tactics as Wagner to open up the middle of the floor for their guards to penetrate with less height in front of the basket.

Since Spellman and Paschall are strong outside shooters in their own right, they are going to draw Wagner out of the post on a few occasions.

Wagner might not follow the Villanova big men out to the perimeter on every occasion, but if the Wildcats are able to set screens at the right times and draw mismatches in the paint that the guards can exploit, it will lead to a handful of easy baskets.

Can Michigan's Guards Keep up with Their Villanova Counterparts?

Michigan faces a matchup nightmare in the backcourt against Villanova, as the Big East tournament champion has four guards capable of doing damage from three-point range at any time.

Containing point guard Jalen Brunson must be one of the defensive keys for the Wolverines, who look to sophomore Zavier Simpson to shut down the National Player of the Year.

Simpson is looking forward to the challenge of stopping Brunson, per Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press.

"It's definitely a matchup that I'm looking forward to. Who wouldn't?" Simpson said. "As a point guard, and one who wants to be elite at the next level, who wouldn't want to look forward to a matchup like Brunson that's a national player of the year and things like that? It comes with it."

Simpson, Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman and the other Michigan guards are going to spend plenty of time around the three-point line, as they try to stop a team that averages 11.6 three-pointers per game.

Michigan achieved plenty of success against opposing three-point shooters, as it ranks 50th in the nation in defensive three-point percentage.

However, the Wolverines aren't the best team in that category entering Monday's game, as Villanova sits 17 spots ahead of them.

Opponents shot 32.2 percent from beyond the arc against Villanova this season, which is a bad sign for Michigan, who needs to make buckets from that area of the court to keep pace with the No. 1 seed out of the East region.

Add in the fact that Simpson and Abdur-Rahkman made two of their combined 17 field-goal attempts against Loyola-Chicago, and Michigan enters at a disadvantage.

The only way Michigan's guards outperform Villanova's group is if the Wolverines turn in the best defensive performance of their lives combined with one of the Wildcats' worst shooting days.

If that combination of factors fails to come to fruition, the Wolverines are going to be playing catch up in some aspect of the backcourt matchup for 40 minutes.
