This year's National Championship game will feature two of the premier coaches in the sport, with Michigan's John Beilein facing off against Villanova's Jay Wright.
Michigan will be playing for the National Championship for the second time under Beilein. The Wolverines last played in the game in 2013 when Beilein's squad lost to Louisville.
As for Wright's squad, the Wildcats are just two years removed from winning the 2016 National Championship—a game in which a few current Villanova players participated in, most notably Jalen Brunson.
In a year that has featured shocking upsets in almost every round, Villanova has emerged as a clear-cut favorite to cut down the nets. The Wildcats have won each of their five tournament games by double-digits, which is a rare feat according to ESPN Stats & Info:
For Michigan to have a chance, the Wolverines will need to find a way to slow down the Wildcats' red-hot shooting. Villanova has hit 66 three-pointers in the tournament, and only Texas Tech managed to hold the Wildcats to fewer than 13 threes.
Defending the three has been a strength for Michigan, however. Only Central Michigan and Purdue (twice) have connected on 10 or more three-point attempts against the Wolverines this season, and they're holding their opponents to just 24 percent from behind the arc during the tournament.
The issue with stopping Villanova, however, is their depth.
All five Wildcats' starters scored in double figures against Kansas in the Final Four, and all five connected on multiple three-point attempts.
Michigan has looked nearly unbeatable during its current 14-game win streak, but Villanova's depth will provide a unique challenge.
The only team Michigan has faced this season that may compare to Villanova in terms of bringing offensive talent at every position is Purdue. The Boilermakers had four players average double figures this season, each of whom also averaged at least one three pointer per game.
While their experience against Purdue could help the Wolverines prepare for Villanova, the Boilermakers proved to be a tough test. Purdue knocked off Michigan twice during the regular season before Michigan got revenge in the Big Ten Championship game.
The key to finally beating Purdue was, of course, stopping the three. Purdue hit a combined 23 three-pointers in its two victories, but Michigan held the Boilermakers to just 4-for-17 shooting from beyond the arc in the Big Ten finale.
Championship Game Prediction: Villanova 81, Michigan 73
With two elite coaches leading their teams into battle, this is sure to be a classic game. Michigan certainly has the talent to pull off the upset—especially if their shooters get hot—but Villanova's incredible depths gives it stability that few teams have in the collegiate game.
Five starters capable of providing an offensive spark gives Villanova a clear advantage and in the end should allow Wright's squad to secure its second championship in three years.
