David KenyonMar 23, 2018

Three Cinderella stories will continue into the Elite Eight, and one magical tale is certain to reach the Final Four.

Of the eight remaining teams in the 2018 men's college basketball tournament, three hold a seed No. 9 or lower. The Loyola-Chicago Ramblers highlight that group, which also features the Kansas State Wildcats and Florida State Seminoles.

But there are established powers headed to the regional finals, too. The Kansas Jayhawks, Villanova Wildcats and Duke Blue Devils all advanced, while a pair of familiar programsthe Michigan Wolverines and Texas Tech Red Raidersalso moved on.

Loyola-Chicago vs. Kansas State

Without question, this is the surprise matchup of the tournament. The Ramblers had a foreseeable, albeit unlikely, path to the Elite Eight, but it's simply stunning to see Kansas State on the other side.

Sure, the Wildcats benefited from some good fortune. Rather than take on the Virginia Cavaliersthe No. 1 overall seed in the second roundK-State met the 16th-seeded UMBC Retrievers. But no part of this run is a fluke for Bruce Weber's squad.

There hasn't been a better defensive team in the Big Dance, as noted by Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller.

Most impressively, Kansas State has accomplished this unexpected run largely without the services of leading scorer Dean Wade. He played eight minutes during the Sweet 16 against Kentucky but didn't play a single second in the second half.

Loyola-Chicago, meanwhile, is only the second team to open the NCAA tournament games with three victories by a combined total of four points, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Regardless of what happens, there will be an excellent story representing the South Region in the Final Four.

Florida State vs. Michigan

Frankly, it's stunning that Florida Statewhich exited the ACC tournament because it fell 26 points behind Louisville and couldn't recoveris one of the eight remaining teams.

But after smashing the Missouri Tigers in the opening round, the 'Noles made a late charge to stun the top-seeded Xavier Musketeers. Then in the Sweet 16, FSU pulled away from the Gonzaga Bulldogs, last season's national runners-up.

Next up for the Seminoles is Mo Wagner and Michigan, which dominated the Texas A&M Aggies to reach the Elite Eight. Seven different players hit a three-pointer for the Wolverines during a 52-point first half and ultimately a 99-72 triumph.

Michigan isn't afraid of pushing the ball, but John Beilein's team ranks 324th nationally in tempo, per KenPom. Conversely, FSU is practically on the other side of the spectrum with the 41st-fastest pace.

The West Regional should be a fascinating contrast of styles.

Duke vs. Kansas

Kansas knows it must prepare for a zone defense. Theoretically, the Jayhawks can tear it apart because of their shooting.

During the NCAA tournament, Duke hasn't yet faced an offense that typically excels from deep. Lipscomb (294th nationally), Rhode Island (168th) and (330th) afforded the Blue Devils a margin for error they probably won't receive from Kansas.

The Jayhawks sport the country's 10th-best three-point rate and knocked down 10-of-22 trifectas to eliminate Clemson.

However, the Blue Devils own a considerable edge in the size department. Kansas relies on a four-guard unit, while Duke utilizes 6'11" Marvin Bagley III and 6'10" Wendell Carter in its preferred lineup. That difference could give the ACC power an advantage on the glass.

There isn't much doubt the Midwest holds the most anticipated Elite Eight clash of the 2018 tournament.

Texas Tech vs. Villanova

Can the Red Raiders stop Villanova from torching the perimeter?

So far, no defense has managed to contain the Wildcats, who've drained a total of 44 three-pointers in three games. They finished 13-of-24 in the 90-78 triumph of West Virginia, adding to their Division I-leading number of triples this season.

Texas Tech entered the Sweet 16 ranking 50th nationally with a 32.7 clip allowed and surrendered a 7-of-18 clip during Friday's clash. The Red Raiders must have an even better showing in the Elite Eight, especially since they gave up a few uncontested looks.

Besides, unless Villanova has a truly horrendous night beyond the arc, the team's enormous volume of three-point attempts will be a burden to match. Texas Tech needs to have an efficient performance on the offensive end since it lacks a great long-range attack.

Whichever teams wins the battle of the three-point line should be headed through the East and into the Final Four.
